I think it is a nice surprise to see Ross ...

Then, here's a frame-by frame of the contact that Breeding calls a hold. Ross is anticipating the entry pass and starts to try to jump the passing lane. The Columbia player actually moves back into Ross, initiating contact. The Ball has been passed & in the air at Frame #4. Note that in Frame #6, Ross's arm is under the Columbia player's arm. He's not grabbing or hooking the player, but from Breeding's view, it could definitely be seen as that. Then, by Frame #8, the Columbia player starts to push off of Ross's body and starts to release towards the hoop. Frame #9 & #10, the ball is directly over Ross/Columbia player. Again, there may be some possible arm-holding/intertwining going on, but the arm-to arm contact was initiated just as much by the Columbia player as Ross going after the ball. And the Columbia player clearly elbows into Ross, pushes off, then moves to the basket. Breeding blows the whistle and raises his hand for a foul call off of this contact after the ball tips off the Columbia player's hand.

He blows the whistle ~0.8 seconds after the contact. He's dribbling as the contact happens, and then the contact causes him to make a loose 2nd dribble backwards which is one of the things the ref sees and causes him to make the call.

To me, looks like the excessive leaning/elbow into Ross's torso coupled with the ball/his dribble arm getting behind his body/a loose handle causes him to lose control of his dribble :)

Well we're going to need Ross defending either AJ or Saunders as Ross is our best, tallest defender. For Saunders, Solo gives up a lot in height and defense. For AJ we either risk Alex or Stewart on him else Ross.

I think the overarching main point is, Ross isn't out there committing silly fouls from a lack of discipline or doing something unnecessary.

These are 50/50 calls that can go either way most of the time. It's not a sign of bad or undisciplined defense.

But again, since he's earning a consistent role and playing time to the point he's on the court more he’ll have to adjust to going out of his way to make sure he's not even giving refs a chance to make a 50/50 call.

This is a dumb conversation. He committed fouls but overall I think he’s looked much more composed defensively this year. There will be games like this. It’s fine, especially as Mullins works back in and his minutes shrink a bit. He’s going to be brought in for defensive intensity. If he can bring that, I’ll live with foul trouble every once in a while.

Glad to see we're going Zapruder film on whether our ninth guy is committing dumb fouls, good use of everyone's time
It's either that or doing boring work work. Seems like an easy decision.

It's like you don't even know us here. Step up your game, please.

People on this board have gotten so goshdarn strange over Ross to the point they think there's a conspiracy against him. He arm bars a dribbler in the neck and the refs are out to get him.

You have one person to thank as it comes to the Ross hypersensitivity.

What would a BY thread be without the addition of a SJ over-extrapolation or hyperbolic statement? Now we can say it's complete!

No one in this thread said said "the refs were out to get Ross". Many have said he played lousy in the 2nd half (up for debate as to whether it was "lousy", but clearly it was not great)...and/or that he committed "stupid fouls".

If you review the game tape (see GIFs, frame-by-frames in this thread), it turns out 3 of his 2nd-half fouls were 50/50 foul calls that got called. We've all seen games where those called fouls were not called fouls (either on UConn or our Comp) based on the whims of the refs on that particular evening.

That's all that's going on in this thread from my end.

No they weren't, that's the point and your Zapruder breakdown doesn't change that.
