Statistics correct as of February 6, 2018
Rank Name Years Wins Losses Pct. Teams (Seasons)
1 Pat Summitt ** 38 1098 208 .841 Tennessee (1974–2012)
2 Tara VanDerveer 39 1028 239 .811 Stanford (85–95, '96-)
3 Geno Auriemma 33 1014 135 .882 Connecticut (1985-)
4 Sylvia Hatchell 43 1004 383 .724 , UNC (1986-)
5 Barbara Stevens 41 1003 276 .784 Bentley (86-)
6 C.Vivian Stringer 47 995 397 .715 , Rutgers (95-)

Does CViv get to 1000 this year? That would make 4 coaches in a single year. Pretty neat.

Yes she does. With the handful of games left (7 maybe?), then the tournament, then the NCAAs, I put my money on the 1000 wins this year if she can only win 5 more. If her TEAM only wins 5 more. They are capable. And they will

It might be tough. They are 2-5 over the last seven games, but they just had a big win over then #13 Michigan. They've got #13 Ohio St, #10 Maryland, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Northeastern left before the Big 10 Tourney.

I miss vowel guy and his chart as well. Thanks, CL82 for putting up your summary. It keeps this discussion front and center.

I am impressed with the effort Tara and Stanford are putting on lately. I thought Geno would be a little closer by now. I still think he will be within single didgets by season end.

Not looking good for #996 for C Viv tonight. Down 21 at the half against tOSU, Mitchell having herself a game. Scoring efficiently.

A little off topic, but I don't like the "C Vivian" thing! If you don't like your first name, then drop the whole thing and just go with Vivian or Viv. Why do we all have to deal with saying and listening to "C Vivian Stringer"?

Because to "CViv" is to like her?

CL82 if you are going to list the schools for Coaches:
Tara had Idaho 1978-1980; Ohio St 1980-1895 for Tara. She had a 7 year head start on Geno.
Sylvia Hatchell-Francis Marion 1975-1986
CVS- Cheyney and Iowa...

It's rare that good coaches get to start, launch and sustain a program in the fickle business of coaching.

She is generally called Vivian by most and Viv by her friends. Early on, right after she came to RU, we were selected as the "host" to Howard, which was then coached by an old friend of hers. Having met them, we were attending a tournament that they (Howard) were in, and said hello to the coach. She asked us to take a note back to Coach Stringer (it related to an injury Vivian's son had suffered in an accident). The note was addressed "Viv".

CVS is also used, of course.

I had it in there originally, but it made too cluttered so I left only the current school.

It's her name...she should use it any way she sees fit to. Maybe she thinks it's disrespectful to her parents or whomever she may be named after to drop any reference to her first name. That said, she apparently has her own reasons for not using it. Her first name is Charlene.

Thanks for posting the update, CL.

The number that really jumps out is Geno's all time win percentage. Only Summitt and VanDerveer are remotely in his league with that number. He's going to finish at over 90 percent. That is way beyond off the charts astonishing. It's likely unmatched in any other coaching career with his longevity, amateur or pro.

The women's coach who is second on the list based on win percentage is Leon Barmore of La Tech. His record was 576-87 (.869). He was head coach there from 1985 to 2002. He had been an assistant to Sonja Hogg for 5 years, and then was co-Head coach with Hogg from 1982 to 1985.

One of his star players was Kim Mulkey. Oddly, in 2008, after having been retired for 6 years, he joined the Staff at Baylor as an assistant coach under Mulkey. He retired again in 2011.

He had coached high school before joining La Tech as an assistant.

I love Leon. I sat next to him and Mulkey during the first half of the OU - Stanford game at the 2010 Final Four. He quit at LA Tech because he hates to fly, and I think they were in the WAC at that time, which was a nightmare for him. I was surprised he came back as Mulkey's asst. since it involved more flying, albeit not quite as bad as the WAC. He's a great coach and a very funny man.

Still, absolutely no offense to him, but Geno is going to more than double the longevity of Leon's career and end up with a mind boggling 90 percent or better win percentage.

Unlikely perhaps, but UNC Women’s Soccer is pretty decent too.

It will be hard for Geno to finish at over 90 percent. Right now with 135 losses he'd have to have 1215 wins to reach a 90 percent winning percentage. That would take 8 more seasons without a loss. It doesn't seem likely

Can't disagree, but I still find it annoying. BTW, Wikipedia says her first name is Charlaine.

Entirely different sports (the draw vs. loss is especially problematic), different season lengths/win possibilities, and different competition levels (see also funding, etc), but not an entirely terrible comparison.

Dorrance is currently (after the 2017 season) 826-70-38 in 934 games, or (if you count a draw as a loss) at 88.44% winning percentage. With 20 national titles and 5 perfect seasons and 11 undefeated seasons.

All in all, pretty similar dynasty numbers.

Also, UNC is a dynasty that, like Tennessee, has probably seen it's peak: 6 NCs since 2000, but only 1 since 2010.

Versus UConn's 9 since 2000-2001 and 4 since 2010-2011.

As a general rule, one should be cautious about accpeting something found in Wikipedia.

Especially is you track down where it came from and see it was added by an unregistered editor who only made three edits ever.

I decided to check her autobiography. (A great read, by the way.)

As a junior in high school, she referred to herself as "Vivian" (page 17)

Her nickname (in high school was "V.I." (page 19)

Her father referred to her as "V.I." page 22

Then, on page 36, she reveals that the C stands for Charlaine.

Then there's the troublesome J Edgar Hoover of the FBI, writer/director M Night Shyamalan, actress S Epatha Merkeson, Nixon's failed supreme court nominee G Harold Carswell, The Today show's J Fred Muggs, Character actors J Carroll Naish and F Murray Abraham, and author E Annie Proulx;

Or we could simply focus on the easy-to-greet-and discuss mononymous crew: Cher, Ann-Margaret, Fabian, Aaliyah, Teller, Iman, Yanni, and maybe even Beyoncé.
