. . . he has had the best point guard in the country, he has won a national championship. Think Jenn, Sue, Diana and Renee.

Saniya Chong may be the best point guard not named Moriah Jefferson, which accounts for the all-out recruiting blitz to sign her. Just look at what has happened so fast (and so late to the dance):
  • Shea went to a game, then Malisa, and the word is that CD is next.
  • Saniya, her coach, her mom, and her whole team was invited to sit immediately behind the UConn bench for the Georgetown game.
  • The Ossining players mingled with UConn players and did a photo-op in Gampel and on the court before the game (I wonder how many email addresses were exchanged)
  • Saniya, her mom (Leslie, I think) and Coach Ricci had an audience with Geno.
  • Saniya will come to a practice in two weeks which, by my calendar, is when UConn is preparing to play Notre Dame.
  • No mention has yet been made of Geno either attending a game or visiting the Chong family at home, but these events are highly likely (if not certain) to occur, and soon.
All of this has been not-too-subtly made readily known to the general public, which in itself is unusual. We often hear that Geno or CD, Shea and Malisa are "on a recruiting trip" somewhere but the destination is not identified. Or we find out that Geno or an assistant was at such-and-such a game, after the fact.

My perception is that all this attention and publicity is designed to stimulate every living soul in Ossining (inmates excluded) to constantly put UConn and Chong in the same exclamatory sentence, uttered 24/7.

I also believe that Geno's trip to California (following on Malisa's similar visit) is being publicized for some reason. We shall see.

It's all TonyC's fault! :)

Things on Saniya, in particular, are moving very fast. I predict an offer and a verbal within about 2 months. (By Tax Day, just for TonyC!)

We're now in an Evaluation Period per the NCAA recruiting calendar. That means staff can go observe Saniya's games, as they've been doing, but can't make direct contact with her on those occasions.

They can make direct contact at any time, regardless of the calendar, if she visits the campus on an unofficial (own dime) visit, which has also occurred.

March 1 begins a Contact Period. That means the staff can meet face to face with player and family off-campus, so you're correct that a home visit could happen relatively soon.

I recall that Jamelle Elliott, then an assistant coach, called Barbara Turner on the phone at midnight plus one minute when the Contact Period began. I understand that there were no surprises in that very brief and positive phone conversation.
