and we had a great time together. "Bow-Wow."

The tenth annual Vermont Ski Museum Antique Ski Race was held at Pico Peak ski area yesterday.
I was the "Technical Delegate" -- which is Alpine Skiing's title for the head referee.

I was wearing a hat with a UConn logo on it. A very pleasant 42 year old man approached me and asked if I was a UConn graduate. I replied: "No, just a big fan of the Women's Basketball Program."

He (Jim Chambers) pulled out his wallet and showed me a picture of himself in the Jonathan "uniform."

Turns out he was one of the two Jonathans who covered all the major events for both men's and women's sports. They have try-outs every year; and he was one of the winners for his sophomore, junior and senior years. In his sophomore year (1990-91) he went to the women's final four with the girls' team. That was UConn's first final four appearance. Kerry Bascomb was a senior, and Meghan Pattyson a Junior. Wendy Davis was their 3 point specialist (whose UConn record for most threes in a season will be broken by KML tomorrow night). Meghan has said often that her team was "slow, white, and dorky, but they really knew how to play basketball." Virginia, in a close game, beat UConn in the semi-finals; and Tonya Cordoza was one of Virginia's star players.

Jim has two daughters (age 8 and 10, I think) and he takes them to 3 or 4 basketball games at UConn every year. Sometimes, men's games, and sometimes the girls'.

Jim was not aware of Mel's book, Heart of a Husky --- so I will mail him a copy tomorrow.
(For those who don't know, I was Mel's editor; and I helped her to get a publisher and printer, and to establish her marketing program with CPTV.)

It's a small world! And there are Huskies everywhere.

Great timing with your post Olde Coach. At the game yesterday while chatting with Tom and some other people your name was brought up. You were missed at the games this year! It also would have been nice to have had another meal together with Tom at the Willimantic Pizza House.

Till next time,

How antique OC? I started on wooden ski's with lace up bindings. I remember grabbing a rope tow powered by an old truck engine at the top of the hill. I think it was in Richmond or Underhill. :)

Now the skis are long gone and I'm the antique. :(

The skis are NOT long gone. There are many in the ski museum's. But even more in private collections. I have a friend in Middlebury who has 500 old skis -- many of which are very old, with just toe straps for bindings, or in many cases "bear traps".

One competitor has some 200 year old skis from Norway and he skis with a "steering pole" which is basically an old sapling about 7 feet long and a little over an inch in diameter. It takes him a while; but he does complete the course.

Many competitors have period clothing as well as skis and boots. It is is quite a show.
