Turgeon absolutely clubbed Dan Hurley in the first half and that was whole game.

As we saw earlier this year, UConn has to be perfect in its personnel and rotations when playing 5 out team with this year's roster.

Dan Hurley stayed with Martin way too long and it killed UConn. He couldn't defend, couldn't score and was a massive negative. We saw this against Villanova and others where Cole would get backed down by bigger guards. Here's a hint.

Cole isn't going to become 6'3" with a big wing span and high vertical. He's a good guard, who learned throughout this year to keep his man in front of him and got good at drawing charges. Cole isn't capable of guarding bigger guards in the paint 1 on 1 when there isn't any chance of help defense. Dan Hurley let Cole die in the first half expecting Cole to do something Cole isn't capable of doing. Instead of adjusting and playing to his players strengths, Dan Hurley let Cole die alone in the paint.

Can we say that Maryland had better players overall tonight? They executed their offense better even as we fought to outrebound them by 11. Ayala should have been double teamed or at least help on him. That is on Hurley.

Hurley and his staff better hunker down and figure out what personnel need to be on the floor to stop the 5 out offense. UConn got annihilated this year whenever the opposing coach went 5 out- SJU, Villanova, Creighton, Turtle.

This loss isn’t on Hurley. This was our worst shooting night of the year. Can’t let the other team shoot 75% from 3 in the first half and go cold at the same time. Hurley can’t take the shots for the team. At the end of the day we didn’t have a leader on this team that had swagger. Cole had it in spurts, Whaley had it in spurts, but just lacked the player with the killer instinct who wants to hit big shots in big games.

Learn to scout, recruit and close on shooters. Prioritize roster composition.
so Dan Hurley's recruiting is the issue now? keep thinking that's the issue.

how do D1 players consistently suck at layups and freethrows? are those not trainable skills?

No, they played better. But they didn't make us go 3-9 from the foul line when it counted. They didn't fall into the lane by themselves to give away a critical point at the end, they didn't miss two footer after two footer after two footer. They didn't make defensive mistakes leaving guys wide open under the basket -- and they made the two footers on those blown assignments.

They play well. We played poorly. As well as they played, we could have won with our "C" game.

The problem is that we have a lineup that can defend 5-out, but that it includes multiple guys who either can't shoot (Jackson, lately Martin, arguably Whaley) or can only shoot and can't do anything else (Polley).

This will be better next year with Akok and Hawkins.

except Polley can't shoot the vast majority of the time. yet he still plays.

I hate to say it but 3 of our starters weren’t considered high major talent coming out of high school.

Being able to shoot above 25 % on scholarship should be an afterthought

Being able to identify and recruit talent that can shoot above 25% against NCAA level teams should also be an afterthought.

Do you not see the inconsistency in these two statements?

Recruiting in terms of learning how to build a roster? Yes.

I get this was the final year of Dan Hurley transitioning from KO's roster to Dan Hurley's roster.

But, you need shooters, you need rebounders, you need players who can break down a defender 1-1, etc.

I'm really hoping and believing an Akok and Sanogo 4/5 will be really good and effective next year. On the five out, it may be Akok at the 5 and I'm amenable to seeing how Akok can function as the 5 in these scenarios.

Next year we'll have a roster where the full roster fits Hurley's system. We still have holes and it's going to be vital we fill them with good players, but I'm very optimistic about the future

Can we talk instead about Martin. He was 2-17 the last two games. Missing open threes and missing tons of layups. Can’t draw a foul to save his life. Bouk and Hurley will take the blame but if Martin has not helped this team at all.

He was 20-60 last 8 games. He's brutal against higher D1 talent and hopefully is a 5 mpg player next year. I say hopefully because I hope other players impove and can show they deserve his minutes.

Ah the inevitable "Hurley sucks" thread. Big surprise.

Big difference between saying he sucks and saying his performance in the first half sucks.

Tyrese Martin was brought to URI by Hurley and than brought to UConn by Hurley. He appears to be very high on him to do that.

He is incredibly flawed and as stated was unhelpful out there.

It's on everyone but Hurley is the coach. I would be okay with a loss if we had a clear offensive game plan. We did not. We did not make any adjustment on that end either.

We clearly have a defensive identity. No one with hald a cell of BBIQ is saying the same about our offense. What is our goal on offense? What type of team are we?

These are questions that Hurley and Co. Need to answer this summer. He's proven he can make changes as a coach so I have no doubt hell come back a better version of himself.

I like Polley the person, but 20 minutes of play with no stats recorded other than 1 PF and 6 points is unacceptable for playing that many minutes. It's not a one off, it happened multiple games this season. Guy never follows his shot after shooting a 3.

I have been saying that UCONN has been missing a pure 3 point shooter since Neils Giffey left. Without shooters, when we do get an NBA talent like Bouknight, they can be jammed up with 2+ defenders guarding them.
Uconn has been totally focused on physically gifted players, and have totally ignored basketball players that shoot, pass, and think...we make the dumbest plays I have ever seen players make.
