What the heck? Hurley trying to mimic Dave “LaLob” Laroche eephus pitch? Or maybe Luis Tiant and Phil Niekro when they were Yankees. Give me some freaking heat down the middle, Dan!
Characteristically, Hurley has been comically critical of his performance, though he threw from the top of the mound and didn’t bounce it, and he has been promising to throw a strike with more on it this time, as he celebrates his second consecutive championship.

Well he obviously didn't come through. :)

Hope he can throw a few innings our staff is now a huge weakness after a fast start. Starters and pen both suck. If the Reds can sweep us the Sox can embarrass us.
Anyone know why they traded King? Wish they had decent hitting and pitching coaches.

O’Neill has lost a lot of weight from his playing days, wow. Hurley must of whispered into Ben Rice’s ear some magic words.

He was trolling Yankee fans by channeling Bill Lee.

How exactly would Spaceman troll the Yanks? He's one of far too many relics of the more than 3/4 of a century when the Sox weren't good enough.

Exactly or inexactly, I have no idea how "Spaceman would troll the Yanks."

I wrote (exactly) that "[Hurley] was trolling Yankees fans by channeling Bill Lee."

Just maybe, even on a very small scale, the trolling worked.

I suppose the high-arcing pitch could have been an in-joke between DH and Karaban, or maybe - in a nod to Occam's razor - it was just a D/D- performance in response to being overly focused on not throwing the ball into the dirt.

Maybe Hurley's D/D- self-grading is part of the long game

I loved Bill Lee but throwing that eephus pitch to a guy in a horrendous slump was one of the dumbest things in baseball history. Sox probably win if he doesn't screw around.

Was one of his sons the catcher?
This article says it was a ball boy.

Hurley's first pitch resembled a Bill Lee eephus pitch, rising a good 15 feet in the air before landing in the mitt of a ball boy behind the plate. To be fair, the coach was dealing with some injuries: shoulder soreness, and an inflamed elbow from hoisting up too many halfcourt shots during practice.

Another good quote from the article:

"They're right where we want them to be," Hurley said of Jaylin Stewart, Solo Ball and Jayden Ross. "We've got some time before November to get them all the way there. But we've been heavy on them. We were not as active in the portal as a lot of other programs. We trust our player development and our evaluation of their talent. My job as a coach is to make sure they're in a position to keep us where we're at as an organization."

I was there today. Didn’t realize Hurley was throwing out the first pitch till they announced him. Got a strong UConn chant afterwards.
