Hurley Presser 9.23

I heard the same thing. I thought he meant more that because SJ was mostly a lob threat, having smaller guards didn't benefit him.
Interesting to see this year how Malachi and Silas make out with the p and r's and the lob assists. I've seen both Mullins and Furphy throwing them in video clips. Mullins was quoted as saying it was part of his growth and learning here.

His critical remarks were primarily directed to perimeter defense which included everyone who played out at the perimeter except the healthy Hassan.

Got the impression that Hurley is not sacrificing defense for gifted offensive players.

Nothing negative was directed at the front court players.

I think 2 primary messages:

He mentioned he got too focused on the "vision" of the team for last season and not starting the best guys to start the year, presumably coinciding with his comments about trying to fit a square peg into a round hole with Mahaney (who started the first 5 games before Diarra took over).

And defense is going to be a big priority this season. He's singled out Solo a couple times on this front to the media because 1) Solo was bad on defense last year and the metrics really show it. And 2) He likely thinks Solo will rise to the challenge this season.

Glad we're still arguing about Samson Johnson.

Hurley made mistakes last year. He also corrected mid stream. If he thought starting and playing Samson Johnson was a mistake, it wouldn't have lasted the whole year. There are plenty of high-level stats that backed him up on this. Only here is there a desire to keep looking back to retroactively prove how smart you were.
