Hurley preparing for UConn's preseason game vs. BC next week

Nobody wants to talk about what they're interested to see in this game? Rough crowd. At least Joe Arruda of the Hartford Courant indulged me.

The final starting spot will likely come down to sharpshooting five-star freshman Braylon Mullins and Jaylin Stewart, a junior determined to make a consistent impact in his third year with the program. Both have shown to be more-than-capable offensive pieces but, as seems to be the theme of the season, defense will be the ultimate separator.

Storylines to watch in UConn men’s basketball’s first preseason exhibition vs. Boston College
It's an exhibition against a bad team. I'll be there, but mostly all I want is to see the new guys in action, see Alex's updated physique, see if there are any changes in the games of Solo, Reed and Stewart. We have several freshmen and transfers so it's a first look at the team. It's like a movie preview.

I don't think BC is that bad. Definitely better than the URI team they played last year. This game probably won't tell us much about the entire team, but it might tell us small details of the parts as you pointed out.

I'm curious to see how Demary plays. In those scrimmages he said he was just trying to facilitate for others and wasn't doing any more than that. It might take him some time to understand how to facilitate and help the team by scoring also. Last year at Georgia he seemed to be more of a scoring PG. He had 5+ assists in only 4 of the 33 games. UConn doesn't need 15 ppg from him but it probably wants at least 10 ppg with more facilitating than he did at Georgia.

Division 1 ACC team. May not be a total walkover?

Even when they were a D1 Big East team we beat them over 20 times in a row. I admit the women's game is probably an even bigger mismatch, but BC isn't good. They are project to be last or next to last in the ACC with Stanford.

I know it’s an exhibition but would still like to see an absolute drubbing.
A 10 point win would be a little underwhelming. I know the team is using this for a different purpose, but I want it to send a message to BC that they just don’t belong on the same court.
Up 30 with 3 seconds left and taking a three would be perfect.
Even better if they could draw the foul too.
I really don’t like BC.

There was an intersquad scrimmage a couple days ago and some students were allowed to attend. Apparently Reed and Demary Jr are nursing minor injuries and didn't play. They'll probably be out for the BC game too...no point in rushing them back to play in a meaningless game. Hopefully they're ready for the MSU exhibition game though

Yep. I think that'll be one of the big takeaways. Does the team look efficient? Is he distributing the ball effectively? Does he generate enough offense so that defenders can't sag off him?

I think the answers to all those questions will be yes, but that's definitely one of the things I will be watching for.

Obviously, all the regular preseason questions will be out there too. How big a jump have our returning veterans made? How do the new pieces fit? Is Reibe an effective backup center? Is Mullins as good as we've heard? Etc.

Would love a beat down but I expect coaches are more interested in evaluating players than game outcome. This game is primarily about learning what the team does well and what it needs to work on.

Don’t care about the score that much but I want to see what we do defensively, as offense takes awhile to click.

The UConn website lists UConn+ as a way to watch the game. That seems too good to be true. Is it subject to blackout? Anyone have any information on that?
Its free, so that's not bad. I don't think its subject to blackout.

I see that it says Audio only on UConn+ .

Not seeing Demary would be disappointing. Reed is the key person we need healthy this season. We know what he can do, so the silver lining if he doesn't play is some insight into our center depth.

I get it. That’s why I said team will use this game for different purpose, ie to evaluate players, lineups, etc.
Doesn’t change fact that I want a blowout. And if we only win by 10, I will be disappointed.

I know Hurley has brutal practices but hearing about players getting injured is not good.
I get it, but they are simulating real game.action, so that is not unusual. Players could slip, overextend, bump into screens, or many other things could happen.

I'll believe defense is the key when both Stewart and Mullins start and Ball comes off the bench.

Agreed - one can hope.

As for NBCSN Boston - I believe it's only available as an RSN in the 4 eastern CT counties - I remember Cheshire not getting it, but did get NESN. Not 100% sure though.

Those with something like the Sports Pack on DirecTV would be fine, since it's not airing a Celtics game.

Directv has it on the schedule for Monday. The guide shows “Women’s College Basketball” from 2pm to 4pm and then again 7 pm to 9pm and in the detail it shows BC vs UConn. Hopefully the 7pm time slot is the men’s game, not a repeat of the women’s game and it’s just mislabeled

They were worse than URI last season, and yet to be seen if they'll be better than last year's URI this season. My favorite preview set has them between 15th and 18th in the ACC. Very likely outside of the top 100.

They're basically just Donald Hand and a gunner from the Summit league.

Early season? It’s funny how even Div ll teams can give top 10 teams trouble in this early stuff. See it every year.
