Hurley noted as nice as he could that as close and physical as they face guard us the ft discrepancy was surprising. He called it a BE reffing that works well “ in conference” and Reed playing under foul trouble and Zuby not factored in. No doubt turnovers and rebounding.
We have a great coach and staff and they will get on fixing those problems as much as possible.

I thought he shot faked plenty. Corner 3, top 3 but their best defender was on him like white on rice. We need more screens for him even old school flare cuts could work but to put in on Mullins for shot fakes is a little thin.

Absolutely but their best defender and a country best was on him. A stronger Mullins would make a difference but we won’t have that.
I feel like Mullins when he is covered like that can drive and pull up, and needs to. He also is a great passer who will find open guys in that scenario.
Will Hurley make those changes?

These takes make me laugh. Every year there are 8-9 teams that coild win. 7-8 get picked off. Last year we hsd Florida right there. A shot here or there and they get picked off. College is such a wild ride. As long as ee have a chance and are one of the 8-9 good with me. Our fans got so spoiled by a tournament run that was literally historic that we mske statements like this. Almost every team that wins the whole thing is a bucket or one possession away from going home at some point but escapes. So i will take being the team with that chance.
As the saying goes, you learn more from your defeats than your victories. While always disappointing to lose, this was a good time for it and a great learning opportunity for us see, fix and work-on our flaws in time for a deep run in March.

Look, we will have a fighter’s chance. We are not 24 and we don’t have Clingan. He down low especially on defense was not replaced. It shows on rebounding, starting fast breaks, and blocking shots. Does Zuby get 21 points on Donovan? Nope. So…. Against good teams it will be interesting.
Going into the season, we thought Tarris might be our best player, and Silas clearly our most important one. Get those 2 guys to clean up last night and we are very hard to beat.
Tarris still reaches in leading to stupid fouls. His obvious achilles, FT's gotta improve. Looked like he wanted to be aggressive last night, but you can't just turn on a switch. Bring it every game!!
Staff needs to alter inbound to frontcourt strategy to take pressure off Silas, and put pressure on other team. Modified fastbreak from the inbounds. Seeing Silas end up with the ball in his hands in the frontcourt without having dribbled, and with the opportunity to attack the rim or dish would be beautiful. Solo and Braylon pass and dribble fine, Malachi and Jayden can handle it well enough when they are in. Jaylin, not so much.
More than one poster thought Silas sloppiness and FT issues are at least partially fatigue based, last night and cumulatively. Don't disagree with that thought.

Pitano despite his limited moral compass is an all time great coach. It’s always better to take his best shot in Conference and have time to adjust for the tournament. Potential big east tournament final vs St John’s is going to be electric!
No doubt Mitchell is an excellent defender. But Mullins has to be able to beat him off the dribble. Pump fake and blow by. When he did fake, he didn't commit to driving it hard into the lane. He seemed to be looking to reposition at the 3-pt line or to get to the FT line. And Mitchell was quick enough to catch him. Hopkins is the weak link on D for SJU. They needed to force a switch so he's on Ball or Mullins, and then those guys take open 3's or drive past him.
Love to see a drive first mentality. Opens up the outside if you are even remotely successful getting to the rim, or at least in the paint. Solo can do it, Braylon can do it, Silas does it, Karaban had some nice upfake and drives last night. Stepbacks and catch and shoots loosen up when they have to respect driving ability.

I'm glad he recognized that the bench was a real problem.
I'm not going to worry too much about one Big East game against a team largely built to game the Big East "officiating" -- but Reed and Ball "gutting out it through injuries" (to their credit) instead of healing seems like it is going to limit this team's ceiling. Neither is currently the player UConn needs them to be for a title run.

Disagree with this. They run him in a lot of actions and teams are generally switching everything with him. It was especially effective yesterday because St. John’s is so long and athletic and they can do that without really having a mismatch anywhere.

Um.. I used to think that but Mullins also has to either come to the ball, beat defender off dribble, shoot the ball w somebody in his face. He can’t simply camp out in corner for 20 minutes. I would have had him on the bench after 10 minutes of that 2nd half.

We have the best coaches in the game but my message to Mullins is to just score the ball any way he can. He has to be more selfish. If he is completely shutdown then distribute for the best shot chance. We have other capable shooters and if Mullins drives then defenders will sag to rebound leaving someone open.

If they are guarding the perimeter this way and clutching and grabbing out there, you don't HAVE TO take it to the rim if you get by them and drive.
You can use your intermediate game.
I say this because the blocks, the misses, the charges (which weren't charges) down low, those aren't as effective as the intermediate game.
We are good at it, strange that we don't use it.

Glad you aren't the coach. Mullins is a threat every second he is out there. I also think they have to run more plays for him. I can see Mullins being just as good or better than Austin Reeves in the NBA. He will get stronger
The one time he did that, he airballed the wide open three lol. Meanwhile he made 2 that were contested. (And had 1 blocked).

I think it is not a change in offense per se, just a change in mentality, go faster early, be more aggressive towards the basket, look for the opportunities. It seems like we are a little wooden in our implementation of our offense. More aggression and creativity towards scoring within the offense. The offense generates looks, I just think we are missing some opportunities to push. Karaban, our most experienced player takes advantage of what is presented within the offense best. Sequence where he scored on two drives and a 3 in short order highlighted that. DeMary and Mullins(Reibe, Smith) are first year in the system. Reed looks like he can still become more proficient as well. Ross is inexperienced in general. Ball and Stewart seem like different players this year, not necessarily in a good way.
Big issues are turnovers and foul shooting(and disparity in fouls called). A minor tweak of the offense might payoff as well. And getting different officials.
