Hurley media presser

Last March, UConn men’s basketball captain Alex Karaban reflected on the previous summer, acknowledging that he didn’t work enough on improving his offensive variety and his strength on defense. He started feeling the consequences.

As long as he's not the team's leading scorer like in the summer practice scrimmage on Friday they'll be good. :) (It's a joke based on a comment from a poster in the "boxscore" thread).

Gotta love having all these articles to read in the middle of the summer. Granted if you watch the video of Hurley's media availability you get everything you need but it's still nice to have articles to read. Can't wait for the season to start!

“Braylon’s shooting is the first thing that stands out as well as his shot making that doesn’t involve just threes,” coach Dan Hurley said. “The fact he can make them off the dribble and shoot them from deep (is huge).”

I usually read every Courant article on UConn bball but sometimes it does get repetitive right after watching the full press video lol
 
Braylon is a scorer - think in the mold of Larry Bird mentality - the fact that he can hit from anywhere is huge for us, because we did not have that all last year.

Now if Solo can notch up to create his shot anywhere not just 3 or drive but stick some 2s more, then it's like having 2 plus shooting guards to pair with a savvy point guard, point forward Alek and the Bear!
 
Another article from Friday's practice. The Register milking it for as much content as they can produce. Lol

Part of the Huskies' defensive issues came from simply fouling too much. UConn committed 639 fouls last season, a full 76 more than its opponents. It was perhaps never more stark than at the Maui Invitational, where Memphis, Colorado and Dayton combined to take a whopping 50 more free throws than the Huskies — and UConn lost all three games.

I don't think we could. We play two centers, that's it. Singare played 40 minutes and then 47 minutes his next season. The year before that Samson played 47 minutes.

If Reed or Reibe is in foul trouble or hurt we're going to go small.

Seriously. Karaban played center against Zach ___ing Edey in the championship game before we went to a 3rd center. Come on, people lol
 
I realize that I am going back a bit here, but Rod Sellers was 6'9" and he went toe to toe with taller, better, stronger dudes all the time. And he did not have an outside game. Koroma and Alex at 6'8" will play center this year when foul trouble happens. But that is okay for brief periods. Alex playing 5 means that he will present huge offensive mismatches. And Koroma has 5 fouls to give and dude finds a way to get open under the basket for easy dunks. I think we are fine, so long as Bear can give us 25 to 28 minutes a game.

Dan can't play the games for his guys but I respect him taking responsibility for the D last year. Taking the heat for his guys and putting the focus on him. Sign of a leader.
 
This is probably the potential international big.

To win a national championship you can’t lose vital starters, but we have depth at wing. God forbid our starting center Reed goes down then Reibe can’t do this by himself as a freshman and we go “small”. Would that hold up against elite competition in the tourney? I don’t know. Are our 6’8 guys strong enough to do that?

This is a great point that I don’t think I’ve seen here before re:injuries… if you lose a vital starter, then championship hope is all but lost no matter how good everyone else is. The UConn women in all but Paige’s final year is a prime example of this. I’m sure there are great counterexamples, but those would be the exceptions to a fairly strong rule.

I could be wrong but our wing situation is so strong we could lose a player as long as it’s not Solo, Alex or Mullins. We also can’t lose our lead point guard.
 
And one more article from the New Haven Register (Hearst Media). I think they've now taken every little thing Hurley mentioned last Friday and turned them all into articles. Not that I'm complaining but it's kind of funny that a 20 minute session with Hurley spawned 6 articles.

“I like Silas’ size at that position and his ability to get into the paint and the fact that he has shown the capability to shoot well from three,” Hurley said. “He is getting used to the system here.

“We look at him a lot like we looked at Tristen (Newton) that first summer. There is a learning curve that is going to go on throughout the year. By the time we got to March of Tristen’s first year, he was an awesome player for us come tournament time. He flashed his junior year and then eventually we got consistency and won the championship.”
