Hurley Media Availability - East Texas A&M

An awful lot of candid talk here. I don't think Dan Hurley is keeping any secrets. It's clear that Dan Hurley blueprinted this team with Mahaney at the point and Hassan off the bench, and it's still Job #1 to make this work. Job #2 is how best to exploit his wealth of wings, and it's clear that this, too, is unresolved. He did at one point come right out and say that his rotation was not settled.

Good summary. While as a 5th year senior I think Hassan should start as a fan, but from a basketball standpoint he’s the one guy on this year’s team that changes the game and makes everyone else better, as Hurley seems to acknowledge. Hurley likes to see that guy on the bench ready to go in after 5 bad minutes of ball. The question is against the good teams does that mean we have dug too deep a hole?

That's the crux of the issue. I'm sure Hurley doesn't want to deliberately dig us into holes as standard practice once we start playing better competition. He wants us to be bulletproof start-to-finish.

Right now (as our guys are playing), starting Hass seems like the clear best plan, but what happens at the first substitution is a work in progress...

It really boils down to Mahaney figuring out adequate defense. He does that, everything starts to fall into place nicely.

I've long noticed Coach Hurley's visible disdain for Dave Borges. I actually feel for Borges. It's like you can hear his voice quiver as he asks his question.

I don't have an origin theory. When do we think Hurley started hating Borges, and why?

Mahaney is shooting 25% from field and 22% from 3. Needs to make baskets to draw attention so passing/cutting lanes open. He hounds his guy on defense but gives up penetration, something needs to change. More help or space to stop penetration. Play like he has and he'll end up behind Nowell.

The Bigs (Samson) needs to coordinate better with Mahaney on defense. I really don’t see much of an effort to take certain angles away on penetrations.

I do think it’s more than Mahaney’s defense. The offense needs to operate more effectively with him at PG and his capable shooting needs to establish itself.

Offense looks much better with Haas IMO...unless we can clone him, we need Mahaney (or Nowell) to step up. Going into the year I was concerned about center...now I'm wondering if PG is a bigger issue?

I mean the way he was talking about Samson in this hilarious media availability, I would say there are def some questions to be answered about the 5. Just love the way he described Hass as the feeling of using your own bathroom at home lmao. Anyway IMO I cant see lead guard as issue because how much of a fan I am of Diarra, plus Ball + Ross may alleviate any concerns with their rim pressure from drives.

It'll be fun to see where Mahaney lands on the scale of Joey to Cam though, just where he fits contextually to some of the impact transfers that Hurley has showcased. Hurley's eager to see as well clearly.

Mahaney also has another year to develop if it doesn't quite happen for him here this season. Joey and Cam were both 2 years older and only here 1 year.
