now that we are in the offseason, how long do we have Hurley?

Yes I know enjoy the good times but curious what everyone’s thoughts are with his comments on longevity/the NBA/etc.

His contract runs out in 2030 as of now.

The only way any college coaching job becomes inviting to him is if he screws up so bad at UConn that he needs to look elsewhere. And if he does that nobody's gonna want him.

Bottom line: there is no better job for Hurley than the one he currently has.
 
He's not going to another college. I don't think the NBA is right for him. He won't be here long term, Tom Izzo style.

Yeah no shot he’s going to another school, that’s why I didn’t put an option. The only way I could see that is an unsuccessful stint in the NBA leads to a return to college at another school.
 
Unless the Knicks or Nets come knocking I'd have to think UConn is his final destination and he'll probably retire by 60. Sure he'll be an analyst in the ESPN studios or cbs though.

Agree, 5+ but not much more.

Also doing incredibly well on the money side that the early 60s exit will make sense for mind and body.
 
he has said he would leave for an NBA gig but hinted that nothing else in college would be alluring to him. A reporter colleague of mine on the sports reporting side noted to me that we got a bit lucky with the timing here. He was a hot commodity post 24 and nearly took the lakers job, as we all know. Then last year his star dipped a bit and he'd done the NBA flirt thing just a year prior which meant that when the NYK job came open he wasn't the top candidate for it. But, in reality, my colleague said, that's the job he would have taken. Who knows how definitive that is. But it would make sense as the next step for him. hard to see him relocating to, say, Memphis.

As in Hurley signs a new deal in 2030, but will be his last and will not be the coach by 2036 (5 years after his current contract is up)

The writing is on the wall as it comes to college sports. The B10 will be the conference where a lot of dominance is built. They have the alumni, the affluence and the $$ to become dominant in the new economic landscape. Hurley is likely going to see that before 2031 and realize unless you're in that country club, you won't have a chance to win. It's already happening. Indiana just bought a CFB champ, Michigan bought theirs, the UCLA women won the women's. Once they skunk ND, who will bring Stanford over, it's going to make the SEC look like an afterthought. There is so much more collective brainpower in the B10.

That isn't an issue in the NBA. Most recent interview with Hurley on his future he restated his interest in the NBA down the road.

He ain't mellow, but I think he grasped that if he kept going with the same intensity he was at, he wouldn't last long. He's been recalibrating his emotions, and if he can find the right balance, he'll be here for a while.

He turned down the Lakers and Kentucky. I don't see gardening in his future. Would being a color guy get his juices flowing? I don't see that either.

I guess the only threat are the Knicks, if they have an opening and the right roster.
 
I think his interest in going to the NBA dipped breifly after having the rough year last year mentally for him. Sounds like it’s crept back in a little bit. That being said the only jobs I see him taking are the knicks and nets. And that’s assuming that either team would have him top of the list of their searches as well. He seems like a guy who yearns to keep climbing, but I think right now it’s probably going to take a backseat until he gets another ring.

I've watched several times as Charles Barkley challenged Shaq. Nothing ever came of it.

But there's no way Hurley wouldn't take a swing of Barkley in the same situation. I'd pay to see that, and I love Barkley.
 
I know as much as anyone nobody else, but Danny is a helluva great coach, an excitement junkie, making bags and killing himself in the process (the good life). If we don't get #7 soon, what's holding him here, not the weather. If a showoff bag and big market makes the right offer who knows.

He seems like the type that won’t be able to step away. The all-time greats never lose that edge. He is firmly in that camp. I think he would be miserable without basketball in his life lol

He's a smart dude - would know how to dial it down. I honestly think half of what he's doing now is an act. Felt a different Hurley in this F4 - one that felt content.

He does another 5, grabs one more NC, passes it back to Luke. I think he feels out the next two portal seasons to see which ways the tides are shifting, and if the Dusty model continues to win, he knows it's time to adios.

I think he wouldn’t want to leave until number 7. Obviously wouldn’t be surprised to see him bounce before hand, but I think he really wants a third ring.
 
Coach Hurley ends up in the NBA. While he's there the ACC implodes from realignment. Duke gets left behind and ends up in the Big East. By then the dookies have grown tired of John Scheyer failing every March. Enter Dan Hurley, the new coach of the Duke Blue Devils.

If he leaves at this point, it’s to retire. I give him around 7 years.

The fact he pulled this team to a championship game shows that he isn’t struggling in this new NIL era and that UConn isn’t a limiting factor (some were worried about our financial amount and conference situation). We already know he’s not jumping to another school and that he’s less keen on the NBA than he was in the past.
 
I really, really hate to say it, but I think Dan makes good on his repeated musing that he won't be coaching at 60. The man is an absolute animal but the intensity required for his brand of coaching isn't sustainable after a certain age. I could see him finishing up the decade and taking a break. Maybe a stint in the NBA after that if the right opportunity presents itself.
 
In all candor I believe it will be closer to 2040 than it will be to 2035 when Danny calls it quits.

The only place for him to go from here would be the NBA, but I believe that the more time passes, the more he will realize that he isn't cut out to be an NBA coach.

He did not long ago state that he can't see himself doing anything other than coaching basketball when he's in his early 60's (basically a 180 on earlier comments), and I believe this part of the country, the program, the school and the potential legacy are all far too important to his family and to him to walk away while he still is capable of coaching at a high level.

I think he easily has another dozen or so years here.
 
@husky429 made this point to me after the portal last year. Recruiting has changed, and while the portal changes how things are done, it is actually less stressful as a whole than having to go out and recruit 3-5 players every year where you are recruiting these kids for 2 plus years.

I think Hurley and staff are adjusting. He is not like Coach Mac at Creighton who loves to play golf. This is his passion, and as long as he has his health, I don't see him going anywhere. He's on the path to being a Top 10 coach of all time.
 
He won't go anywhere else in college and really don't see the NBA happening.

I know he has made comments about the NBA and not wanting to coach much past 60... but I kinda see 10-15 more years as more likely than 5-10. He is not Pitino (planning to coach until he drops), but I think it will take a whole lot for him to be ready to hang it up.

He is a coach at his core. Just like his Dad. Even though they are not completely the same... the apple doesn't fall that far from the tree.
