Hurley Karaban Memphis Post Game Presser

The strange thing to me is that so many people are perfectly fine with the way Hurley acts towards officials as long as he doesn't get a T. I think it's just wrong. I think 99% of the time, referees are just regular guys trying their best to do their jobs the best they can. Of course they won't get every call "right". Nobody deserves to be treated the way they are treated by Hurley. I'm glad Hurley is our coach, but his antics are inexcusable to me.

Danny has to be smarter and control dealing with refs and this is not exactly new but his intensity and desire to win is in his DNA.
This trip is a learning experience for the staff, the players and us fans. Yesterday’s game was highly entertaining, and I get that we just care about the outcome but some very good things happened, team did not quit. This tourney can still be a success and jumping off point for the season and the coaches will find out if changes are needed but they better not mail it in. And we can’t forget that on the other side of the ball there are players that want to win every bit as badly as we do. Those Memphis players, all transfers with tons of experience showed it yesterday.

My take... Hurley's sideline behavior is a direct reflection of how he sees his teams. If you watch our losses from last year, Hurley was never as animated as he was even at the beginning of yesterday's game.

This team has immense pressure to continue the success of the last two seasons. Fair or not, these guys are certainly comparing themselves to last year.

It's difficult to hear AK say "it's all on me, 100% on me" after a loss. This team is going to have to learn to grow through losses because they are not last year's squad and will lose more games.

I actually appreciate that Hurley cost us the game- I hope he uses it as an opportunity to stress to the team that mistakes, even by him, will happen and are chances to grow. This was a critical step in turning the page from last year.

People online are very mad about Hurley's "back to back champs shouldn't get that whistle" esc quote from today. Thinking he means we deserve special treatment. I think of it more like "if you're going to profit off the exposure the back to back champs bring you, you shouldn't go out of your way to screw them on the court." Lots of Reddit folks very mad Hurley yelled at some refs while they were doing a terrible job last night.

Honestly again, if a different coach was in that situation and said that, I would have the same reaction. He’s said it a few times now, I don’t like it.

Now I’ve always thought the player should be able to clear himself to clear so it’s not a bad call. BUT the problem I have is Reed had the same play occur from him on O and he was called for the foul, which instead should have been a 3 point play. Inconsistency by the refs all game!

this is just like before the 2 championships. Hurley is a complete ass when it's not going his way. You have to be able to handle losing a little better. Not very classy, I don't care how bad the officiating was.

To be fair, if he hadn't gotten T'ed up, UConn probably would have won, and then no one would have gotten negative attention.

Every human being's strengths, when taken to extremes, are our weaknesses. That's just how we work. It's impossible to calibrate it perfectly. What makes Hurley the best coach in the sport also, when taken too far, leads to this nonsense. He can continue to improve on it, but it will always be there at times when he loses his head.

That's an official in over his head and thinking the game is about him. Just pathetic

Memphis pressed and reached in all day, and we were the team called for far more fouls.

Inconsistency on defensive fouls, inconsistency in offensive fouls, inconsistency on elbows, and the foul on McNeeley in the final minute was an absolute joke as well as a game changer. That's how refs in over their heads roll, they want to be the show.

I think Johnson's foul in OT was a bad decision on his part. Having said that, he was probably tired of being hacked without a call while being called for every little thing himself. He was obviously frustrated by being pushed around. That too is a sign of bad officiating

BTW: Memphis played a good game, made shots, and played the way the refs let them play. I hope we see them in March, I think it might resemble the Georgia Tech rematch in 2004.

AAU ref mentality "I run the show" .. 3 calls... Reed turning with a small under him (no room to move) getting called for a ghost elbow, then Solo getting an actual elbow and getting called for the foul instead of said elbow thrower, and Liam over nobody's back bc 2 players going for the ball means neither boxed out... Pathetic call. Compounded by the T being called to decide a game, is a fireable offense.

Fair enough. My point was that, "I'm glad Hurley got the T to take the negative attention off the rest of the team" misses the fact that the T itself went a long way to raise UConn's chances of losing. Without losing, negative attention wouldn't be a problem.

Was going to post about Karaban post game interview comments, glad you caught that too. Way too much pressure for that young man to put on himself. Play basketball and enjoy seeing your young teammates and team develop into a formidable unit. He can’t do it all himself, so he shouldn’t try. Karaban is like a Donnie Baseball hoops version. Plays for the love of the game and his mates. Don’t take the joy out of it “Alex Hoops”, it’s gonna be fine.
