Hurley has a plan

He knew Solo was probably missing the season

So he has someone waiting in the wings. He couldn't tell us about it yet because we would be like WTF?

So that's my theory
The first plan we were privy to was Donnie Freeman.

There is some flexibility so I am not too concerned.

Mullins starts at the 2, Khamenia SF, bring in a starting 4, bring back Stewart… let Stewart backup the 3/4, let Ross back up the 2/3 let Mullins slide to the 3 when needed, and get county some minutes at the 1&2. Get another guard for the 1&2 and bring in another big. Wishful thinking

Of course Hurley has a plan. This arrangement makes a lot of sense. Solo gets to fully recover and have the best possible senior year in 2027-2028. He gets a decent paycheck both years, undoubtedly much more in the year he plays. Meanwhile UConn wouldn't have been helped by a semi-impaired Solo in 2026-27 given that Mullins, Landrew, Ross, County need minutes at the 2 and 3. Given that Ross is a senior Hurley will want to find minutes for him, Mullins is being showcased for the lottery, and Landrew didn't come in to sit on the bench. That's 3 players who need starter minutes out of the 80 at the 2-3, with County as the backup (and Khamenia too who can play the 3 if needed).

So now we need center #2, backup PG, and backup PF.

I honestly think the plan is Ross or Landrew at the 3 and we won't be getting another starting caliber transfer. I think from here we will just add backups at PG, PF, and C.
I think some of Balls money gets freed up to spend on a quality second Center that can also be stretch 4, and on backup point guard…With Ball out for the year, I would also consider bringing Furphy back for depth at the 2, kid is a baller , knows Hurley system and I think he makes a huge jump this year, UConn really got him in shape and would hate to give that away relatively cheap to another team….

I would just work under the assumption that Ball knew this has been in the works for a while and all of the transfers knew about it when they made their decisions. I highly doubt this changes anything for Furphy.

One thing is pretty much certain, Stewart is not coming back. His decision was despite being aware of Ball situation that we just found out. As his dad stated, it was a tough one. He probably wants to be the highlight or on of the key elements of another team’s offense so his attributes are not outshined by other stars. This is his last year of college exposure so one cannot blame him for wanting more and thinking about himself. Either way, that ship has sailed away for UConn in my opinion.

According to Trilly, Freeman was only coming to UConn if Mullins went pro.
Don’t believe him. Without Mullins or Ball we’d need to bring in a starting SG not another F…The only way that what he said could have worked is if Hurley thinks Ross can start at either spot on the wing which I’m skeptical of:
Silas/Ross/NK/Freeman/Hines

Plus The fact that Stew still left despite Ball being out means we aren’t bringing in another F. Otherwise you’d hope stew woulda stayed.

Was Cam Spencer a big name in the portal when he transfered here? What about Malachi? Hassan Diarra? I ask because I think there are likely some guys under the radar that Hurley and staff might be interested in that are not getting the attention as some of the bigger names in the portal.

Same but with the Solo news I wouldn't be shocked to see us bring in some deep bench wing that can shoot

That's perfect.

He deserves this chance. He will always be a Husky!!

The fact Stew left even with Ball being out means the 3/4 rotation is still set. we prob aren’t bringing in another transfer F. We still just need a backup CG and backup C.

Silas 30 / Transfer CG 10
Mullins 30 / Transfer CG 5 / County 5
Ross 25 / Landrew 15
Nik 30 / Landrew 10
Hines 25 / Transfer C 15

30: Silas / Mullins / Nik
25: Ross / Landrew / Hines
15: Transfer CG / Transfer C
5: County

I have to agree with ThatGuy and bendm. We don't have unlimited NIL so we're just looking for backups now.

To quote coach Dale, "My team is on the floor."

If that is the plan, we are not winning a title.
Why? If Hines and Mullins make the sophomore jumps most expect, we should have a top 3 back court in the country and one of the better defensive 5s in the country. Khamenia in this system should be a really strong shooter and secondary creator and Ross provides a pretty strong floor at the 3 with Landrew providing a lot of upside there. There’s also a ton of lineup flexibility with Mullins/Ross/Landrew/Khamenia.

I think this is pretty much it except that I believe it will be a straight transfer PG in the portal in the mold of Diarra or Smith. Demary can slide to 2 if County can't handle whatever minutes are leftover behind Mullins.

Besides, I can't shake the feeling that this Solo injury will work out just like when NHL teams like Tampa and Vegas were using injuries to avoid the cap a few years ago. Players had legit injuries and were ruled out for the year but just happened to be healthy right when the playoff started. WIth the proposed rules change to 5 years, I suspect we'll see Solo coming back to bolster the bench by late February.

We should lower expectations if we’re thinking Nik plays 30 min (he struggled to play 20-25 at Duke in a brainless system), Hines 25 (fouls way too much), and Landrew 25 minutes as a true freshman.

All were decent names especially Spencer who had a great prior year at Rutgers.

Ross is good player but he is a sixth man. He’s not a good enough shooter to start. He’s the perfect power sub.
