With 2 years in, I thought there were already some pretty stark trends emerging from year 1 to Year 2...

using UConns Page, lets talk Hurley year 1

Notes -

1. The team was in total dissaray all year. Look at the scatterplot of those performances. It almost looks totally random, and the overall trend was that our game scores decreased as the year went on. Efficiency was Good (top 100) on offense and average (100-200) on defense.

2. We did not have a "strength" on offense. The only area where we were above average was offensive rebounding rate.

3. On defense, we had a lot of blocks but at the cost of an absolutely terrible fouling rate.

4. In "Quality Games" we were... 1-12, and in close games we were 1-6

Compare that to this year, and the really impressive performance improvement is crystal clear, as well as where that improvement has been seen.

Notes:

1. First and foremost, we rose from #95 to #55 thus far, showing that record aside we are performing better overall.

2. We have ratcheted up BOTH our offensive AND defensive efficiency. We are now in the top 75 in both metrics, mostly driven by better FG% defense and an increase in the ability to turn the opponent over, which we are definitely bordering on the elite. Of course, we were higher in defensive efficiency, around the top 25, until Akok has gone down.

3. Look at how much more consistent our performances have been. If you look at last years scatterplot, it is a wild arc of performance level. Now, even the games we lose, we are clustered on the top 1/3 of the chart in game score. To me, this reflects the fact that, as people say, the culture is there. There is no giving in, no blowouts, no easy bucket with this team. And it shows in the data.

4. In quality games this year we are 5-8 compared to 1-12 last year... and in close games we are 3-6 compared to 1-6. Both are huge to our record improvement.

5. Am fascinated to see the progress next year as we get more offensive talent and athleticism to add to this crew. We will miss CV alot across the board, but overall the data trend matches the story we are seeing on the court. We are ascending rapidly.

Non measurable but the biggest thing I see change wise is just swagger. They come out confident, look like they belong, and expect to win games. Little things like Whaley jawing at precious & Bouk jumping in excitement as Whaley put that emphasis dunk in last night are things we haven’t seen in a while.

Also not accounted for in 2018-2019 was injuries to Jalen Adams (missed 7 games from Feb 6 to March 10...we went 1-6 in that stretch) and Alterique Gilbert (missed 3 games in March, and 5 games in February...we went 3-5 in those games).
