Hubert Davis OUT at UNC

It’s tough with the way sports are now, leaving a good SEC program to go to a storied ACC program isn’t the no brainer it used to be.

Oats and Golden being good examples: is it better at UNC or Alabama? He’s been in the sweet 16 every year and has overflowing resources.
Florida is as close to a modern new/blueblood as UNC in a better conference. I think staying at FL is a no brainer.

My friends who are huge Carolina fans want Brad Stevens. Would he leave the Celtics for this?
There have been rumors down here that he would take it. Is it true? Not a clue but it’s been talked about here in NC for the past week

It's wild to me how Carolina hasn't had a top 5 pick since 2005 and how little success players from Carolina have had in the NBA since Vince Carter.

.-.
Per The Athletic, Oats and Golden have very large buyouts that would be difficult for UNC to stomach. But more importantly, the off the court issues associated with both coaches probably disqualify them.

They have to call Lloyd and May. Everyone takes a call from Carolina and listens to what they have to say even if they ultimately decide not to take the job. Same goes for Jay right even though he is probably not coming back to coaching.

Danny Hurley would make a ton of sense, but is way too bombastic for the Carolina faithful.

Bobby Hurley is a joke, both because he is a Duke grad and is not a great coach

They would never pull the trigger, but the quickest path to a national championship would be to hire Pitino.

UNC isn't hiring Oats or Golden with the character concerns. UNC isn't going Smith tree, but they're also not going to tarnish The Family. Golden and Oats also have $15 mil buyouts for at least the next few weeks.

I don't know if you can pry Lloyd or May. I'd certainly ask.

Billy Donovan seems like he may be in play. A lot of rumors he's done in the NBA. He had some personal trauma, might want a reset. UNC a big enough name to draw him back. No longer have to bother with recruiting in the same way, can hire a GM, etc.

I don't know if Otz's ceiling is high enough. He's a bit of a system guy. Is he even enhanced by UNC's resources? Byington is a fallback choice, hasn't proven enough. I think McCasland is the best fit of current career and trajectory, but he's a Texas guy. He feels like Kansas eventually.

I haven't heard Brad Underwood's name much, and maybe he's too old. But I could see if they swing and miss on a couple others, could see him getting a look.

Are you trying to get us going with the Danny Hurley nonsense?

is UNC the biggest job in the sport? I think they get someone really good like Golden or Oats.
The fact they're the biggest job in the sport suggests both Golden and Oats aren't worthy of it considering the baggage they bring.

Unlike Cal at Kentucky, Hubert really achieved nothing. A title game run from the 8 spot with Roy's players, a S16, and a couple of disappointing years.

Seems like a nice guy, but UNC should be running that conference, at least right up there with Duke.
But what about the last 8 rears or so for Cal at UK? No tourney, St. Peter’s, Oakland, twice to KSU. With still some high level NBA talent. Going to defend UK here, nothing wrong with expecting to win when you recruit like Cal.

Wild card to me is Otz. Great coach at a school where I could see the vision of upgrading to UNC. Biggest obstacle might be his familiarity with the Midwest, has been there his whole life so might want to stay around. Kansas seems much more likely in that regard.

I'd probably put it 4th behind Duke, Kansas, and UK. Duke has the USA basketball, Nike, and ESPN machines. UK has the most money, which is pretty important in the NIL era. Kansas and UNC similar level.

And yet UK missed out on like their first 5 choices two years ago

I’ve always felt like UNC and UK are the biggest jobs in the sport, the biggest of the blue bloods. You get it rolling at either place and you are a king. Huge expectations though, the programs are both very similar.

People don't like to move, and this was also before the NIL stuff was as entrenched and more solidified as it is now, and Kentucky's place at the top of that hierarchy. They were going after national championship winning coaches who had great situations and were building statues on campus.

UNC will likely miss on its top few targets, too. (May, Lloyd, possibly Donovan).

Lloyd is the one that makes no sense to me.

Why leave what he has going at Arizona. And he still hasn’t made it a final four yet.

Scott Drew is another possibility. His past couple years at Baylor haven’t been great but he’s proven he can win. Wouldn’t be shocked if he ends up there

Ask Goodman how that early tournament exit for UConn went lol
His picks for the Final Four: All 1 seeds. With Arizona over Florida in the final. Not exactly going out on a limb.

By the way, Seth Davis and Andy Katz picked UCLA over UConn. So the so called experts aren't any better at picks than the average college basketball fan.

Last year I was one of the top 1700 out of something like 25 million brackets. This was at the start of the elite 8.

And then it all went to crap.
