Most of the "track" and Cross Country are just interested in a long coed jog for their college resume.
I really am not familiar with track and field at the HS level. I imagine there aren't cuts or limits on team size. There are a lot of events. Maybe presents a better opportunity to be able to compete than some other sports.
Or just a chance to hang out with coeds as you noted.
Some people like me are dumb and get talked into turning out for x-country by a buddy "as conditioning for basketball," only to have said buddy quit after about a week. I stuck it out. But I'm short with thick legs, definitely not a x-country build. My distance running career was short and not distinguished.
