The Giants catcher Bailey hit an inside the park 3 run homer to win the game for SF 4-3 yesterday. It was a done deal by the time the SS got the throw from the outfield. He had no chance of getting Bailey at the plate. If the score was 3-2 when he batted and SF only needed two runs to win it would have been recorded as a 2 run triple, correct? The runners were on first and third. I’m glad they needed all 3 runs because that would have been too bad not to get credit for the HR.

No, it would should still be scored a homerun. The game is not over until the play is completed and whatever happens during the play should count.

If the game winning run (only possibility being home team, ninth inning or later) scores on any hit other than an over the fence home run, the game is over (unless the possibility of a force out still exists).

The batter is credited with the most possible bases that would have scored the runner unless the official scorer sees the need to reduce it by a base.

I can certainly see it both ways, but only because it is on a would-be homerun and the defense is still trying to actively get the runner out.

Come to think of it, it doesn't make sense otherwise. I'll (begrudgingly) take the L. OTOH, it's never happened, so it's all academic. Hope this doesn't affect your opinion of me (unless it was already low) ;).

IIRC (I'll need a Met fan to provide details) Robin Ventura hit a game ending, grand slam single in the playoffs, somewhere around 1999 or 2000.

He hit the ball over the fence in the bottom half of an extra inning game, but before rounding all of the bases, something happened (passed another baserunner?) which made him out, after crossing first (obviously scoring the runner from third), giving him a game ending single.

FWIW, it wasn't until around 1925 that the batter received credit for the home run if it ended the game and scored more than the necessary runs. He would get credit for the longest allowable hit that would have scored the go ahead run.

I think I remember that. Players rushed the field and I think it was technically ruled obstruction. He didn't try to round all of the bases and never touched home plate.

Hah he absolutely tried to round the bases but his teammates mobbed him. The game was tied so only the runner on 3rd needed to touch home plate. Gotta love a grand slam single.
