How you know we’ve arrived

I read 100 replies and everyone I saw was thanking the players, coaches and the team for a great season. If one got by the mods, I guess that's on them. But as a whole, their fan base was exactly what a fan base should be - supportive of their team, even after a loss.

UConn hadn't lost at halftime, but the number of people who were trashing players and the team and the coach was pretty disgusting in the chat room.

Apples to apples, their fan base and the website Duke Basketball Report is so much better than what I see here from UConn fans when the team loses.

Granted, they're likely all doctors self-medicating after the loss, but they were pretty classy, all things considered.

I agree with this. I was expecting to see them destroying Scheyer and instead they were backing up their team. There are some who were upset with the officiating, but it was mild compared to the all out Moon landing conspiracy some have here.

He barely watches any sports and he won't watch anything past 7 pm.
Tony Kornheiser is an old man who’s in bed by 7 o’clock and brags about it. How are you a sports talk show host and go to bed before any of the games start on a given night? Weird

That’s because a Yankee hat is a “New York” hat. It’s bigger than the Yankees.
I saw them all over Europe and a large percentage of the people wearing them had no to very little idea what the Yankees are. It seems to be a symbol of American fashion as opposed to anything showing their allegiance to the Yankees.

When coach K retired, NCAA basketball needed a villian. That new villian is Dan Hurley and I love everything about it.

Enjoyed looking at some random fan threads and message boards and things for reactions to the Elite Eight finish from impartial sources. Other than North Carolina, it is amazing how many fan bases were genuinely torn. Used to be hatred for Duke unified the country - but not any more. The Kansases and Kentuckys and Indianas hate us, hate our fan base, hate Hurley, wanted both teams to lose and don’t want to see us win No. 7 (or 3 in 4).

In 1999, we were the darlings of the nation by taking down the evil empire. Now we’re also an evil empire.

Brings a tear to my eye.
99% of Kentucky fans were rooting for us. It is the Kansas fans that were torn.

I haven't seen any of that on the Duke basketball report. That's a very well run site. You know where you see people whining about refs? The Boneyard. It's embarrassing.
DBR complains about the refs plenty. One of the hotter takes there is that "working the refs" should be banned, and it's excusable that Scheyer doesn't do it because "that's just who he is".

IMO scheyer's biggest problem is his utter lack of fire on the bench...and that goes with coaching his team as much as working the refs. Not a chance in heck Dan Hurley lets refs get away with only calling 1 foul on an opponent for an entire half, as Scheyer did with UNC, for instance.

Look, I don't think working the refs should have that level of impact either...but it does, and not adapting to that is 100% on Jon.

My favorite was a Providence fan who said something to the effect of "UConn pretends that Duke is a rival."
That PC poster should ask some Duke fans how neutral they feel about UConn. Honestly, we don't have much to complain about anymore. We've evened the all-time postseason series at 3-3 after falling behind 3-0, and we've each got a buzzer-beater over the other to go to the Final Four. Seems pretty balanced to me. All of the games have been in the regionals or higher too. Big-time stuff. Though, I'd take our wins over theirs at this point.

This reminds me of a conversation I had about four years ago a coworker of my son who was a PC fan.

I asked him about URI and he responded "they think they're our equals, their fans think it's a rivalry but it isn't. The games are a lot more important to them. To us, it only matters because if they win we have to hear from them how they're as good as we are ".

I was nice enough to nor respond but couldn't stop thinking "if he were to replace PC with UConn and URI with PC the conversation could have remained identical".

I don’t care how Duke or any fans feel about us.

The lion does not concern itself with the opinion of sheep.

To be fair, they have a lot of experience losing games went up by double digits. After a while, I'm sure it's just an unrelenting the ache slowly eating at their souls.

Also, you and the mods see a lot more questionable stuff than the rest of us do. (Thanks for that.) From my perspective we're generally pretty solid, and if anything leaks through, it gets self policed by the rest of the board. I will say you can't compare our chat to their main board. That's apples to oranges. The whole reason why you pushed everyone into game chats rather than game threads is the fact that during the game there are numerous reactive hot takes. I kind of think that's to be expected.

"So get off social media, stop injecting the dopamine into your arm and get serious about the preparation and the practice, because we don't hang banners for Final Fours at UConn. We hang national championship banners."

So UConn didn’t make a Round of 32 banner for 2025?

Yep. That's correct. Both teams were No. 1 for the first time ever. Or were going to be - Syracuse was a Big Monday game and I think the polls came out on Tuesdays back then, but we were the presumptive No. 1.

The women had knocked off Tennessee a week or two prior, and the men were about to join them. We went on a nice second half run, the place was going bonkers, and Dickie V went on a spiel.

It wasn't exactly a jinx. Neither team had ever actually won a title when he said that, and they have now won 18. Since 1995, here is the chart of basketball titles over a 30-year span (taking out one for COVID):

18 - UConn (12 women, 6 men)
5 - Tennessee (all women, obviously)
4 - Baylor (3 women, 1 men).
3 - North Carolina (all men) - would add a women's in 1994 and a men's in 1993 going back two years.
3 - South Carolina (all women)
3 - Florida (all men)
3 - Duke (all men)
3 - Kentucky (all men)

Pretty insane when you look at it.
It's ludicrous that there are only 4 programs who have won both a men's and women's championship: Baylor, UNC, Maryland, and us.

For the others, the lesser of their two programs have only won it once (Baylor men, UNC women, Maryland both actually).

We've won championships in the same year twice. Furthermore, we've denied other programs the opportunity -- beating the Baylor women in the 2021 Elite 8, the Duke men this year when they had dual Elite 8 participants, the Duke men in 1999 when they had dual finals participants.

I also think there's a certain population where our success has beaten them into submission. Even some of the PC board is like "As much as I hate them, I can't believe what they've been able to do" type stuff.
I saw a few similar statements on the Cuse board...I damn near fainted

I agree in the sense that rival schools' fans always accused JC of being dirty and a jerk. He was neither, but calling him a cheater was an insult not just to his character but his coaching.

Nobody is refusing to acknowledge Dan's accomplishments. A lot of people just think he's a jerk because of his sideline antics and trolling. To the extent a greater number of people hate Danny, it's because more casual fans know who he is because he's become a celebrity.

Hurley isn't a jerk, he just has no filter between his brain and his mouth.

It cracks me up that Rick Pitino doesn't get nearly as much bad press as Hurley these days. Same for Calipari. Apparently what a coach says is far more important than what s/he actually does (repeatedly).

Screw all the other fan bases, the talking heads, etc.
UConn basketball is the best brand out there- both men’s and women.
National Championships are the standard and the numbers don’t lie- that’s what idiots fail to reason and understand.

I believe that UConn knocked off Georgetown at the Hartford Civic Center on the same day that UConn beat the Tennessee women. I attended both games. That was also the day that I decided that all home games should be played on campus.
