How will we stop Hildalgo tonight?

I don’t think Hannah is all that easy to tire out. She’s been playing 30+ minutes per game pretty much all season. Her conditioning is at a peak and she hasn’t been worn out by a long season yet. That said, @jabstep is probably right — that is likely to be the strategy. But @ScottCT is also probably right that ‘stopping’ Hannah may not be necessary. She can get her stats and we still win handily. Just don’t let the rest of the team beat us.

I made this point in another thread. Geno and his staff have never let 1 player beat them. I know we get a little crazy about HH. But the losses to ND over the past 3 years were to loaded Irish teams. This ND team has one great player surrounded by solid role players. HH will get her points, but UConn will make it difficult for her. Unless 1 or 2 other ND players have the games of their lives, ND will be extremely challenged to hang around with UConn.

On the other side of the coin, how will ND try to stop, Sarah, Azzi, KK, Ash, Serah, Blanca, K9, Allie………

She will get her points..she is that good...the bigger question for me is how will the refs calls be....reason being that HH tends to go wildly to the basket throwing herself into a defender while shooting a circus shot...if the refs falls for that and call a lot of fouls, UConn will have a problem.

Stay out of foul trouble, especially KK and K9.

The post defender cannot drop off on the high pick and roll. Play it high.

Lots of minutes for Blanca in this one. Even if Jana is available, I would not play her a lot. There are games where she will be needed but I worry she will get caught in switches in this one.

Go at Hidalgo on offense, get her in foul trouble. Make her work on defensive end.

Double team and get the ball out of her hands, and deny her when she is playing off the ball.

Get a lot of shots up. If after all that we can't stop her, outscore her.

How do you think Geno will try and stop Hildalgo?

1. Make her go left
2. Double-team her to get the ball out of her hand.
3. Press her the whole game to tire her out.
The first 2 sound good, but she’s like the Energizer Bunny, so I’m not sure you can tire her out.

Just play our game. Maybe 1 of 2 games left where we might need to shorten up the bench. If our starters need to play more so be it they need to get used to it for the final 3 games in tournament. Kk will be just fine with a little help if she drives to the basket. Use KK and maybe Ferris to run fresh bodies at her.

SO TRUE! (About H.H. going wild to the basket and throwing up circus
shots to get to the free throw line). QUERY to the BONEYARD: What
do you think about the comment above: "IF THE REFS FALL FOR THAT"?
Do the refs have a choice????????

I'm on board with making her go left but I'm less concerned about her scoring then her steals.

A study of NBA steals concluded that off-ball steals, such as intercepting passes were about 65% of the total, while on-ball steals were about 35% of the total. However, it's my impression that Hannah Hildago gets most of her steals as on-ball steals, simply reaching out and grabbing the ball from the ball handler.

I watched a number of Notre Dame games this year and I'm amazed at how often the opposition ball handler just brings the ball up in front of her even when she's defended by Hannah and then is surprised when it's no longer in her hands. I hope and trust that the scouts observe this as well and make sure the ball handler does a better job of protecting the ball or maybe even make sure the other four players do most of the ball handling. Hannah can't cover everyone, and we are blessed to have multiple players who can handle the ball.

I get people want something to wring their hands about in what has been a ho-hum regular season so far, but what am I missing?
As great as Hidalgo is, ND currently uses only six players in their rotation, don't have much size and are barely hanging on at the fringes of the rankings for good reason (see that howler of a game vs Ga Tech).
Huskies would have to play really poorly for an upset to even be considered, imo.
TN would probably be a more difficult opponent (maybe).

1. Agree, make HH go left, limit her possessions.
2. Limit her steals by limiting the possession times of players HH is guarding. That will make her work harder on defense.
3. Switch on defense to make it harder for HH to get open shots.

Working for 35 minutes against other teams is different from the same minutes against UConn!

Go team!

Put Super-Glue in her sneakers and then at the front of her chair on the Notre Dame bench. If that doesn't work let her get her 20-25 points and just stop the others from scoring.

She scores a lot of points off live ball steals. Minimize those.
Give her 5/6 feet outside the 3 point line, she is just ok from threes.
Over play her right hand and she will pull up. She can make those but are hard shots.
When she gets near the rim, she always jumps into the defender to get fouled. Try to keep her off the foul line.

Better questions...how are the Golden Domers going to stop Sarah? How are the Golden Domers going to stop Azzi? How are the Golden Domers going to avoid KK, Ashlynn and Kayleigh? How are the Golden Domers going to stop Blanca? Can Serah have a dominate game against the Golden Domers?
Can Jana return from her concussion and give UConn a few minutes of good defense? Can Caroline get time on the floor?
Did I miss anything?

Yes, the title of the thread.

Agree with #2. Put Sarah at the high post, take advantage of her brilliant passing. A couple of UConn's shooters will be hot from 3, and Blanca and Serah should be able to get several bunnies. And Sarah can get the ball to any of them.

Agree with some of your points here. Problem with playing high off pick and roll is that when the high defender ( switch) gets beat off the dribble the defense moves to close the lane opening the corner shooter or a quick drop off for a short jumper. How good is ND at making those shots?
Can ND handle a big like Jana?

I don’t think they really have to? She will get mid twenties probably. Just play their usually shut down D. ND does not have the horses they did last couple years.

Turn our offense into defense, run our switches, get her on one of our slashers ( KK, K9 or BQ), spread the shooters for kickouts and drive and draw fouls on her. Make her work hard on offense and defense, and pick up some fouls on her.

I'm still curious about what would happen if you throw Blanca at her in order to deny HH getting the ball very much. Blanca's got height, speed and quick hands, which should mess with a lot of passes.
