The Red Sox seem to have some real gems on their Salem (advanced A) team. I've always looked closely at BB's and K's in evaluating players. High ratios of K's to BB's for pitchers is always a good indicator and low K's to BB's is usually a good indicator for hitters. The Salem team has starter Matt (remember him?) Barnes (36 K's, 3 BB's, 28 innings, ERA 1.93) and reliever Michael Olmsted (27 K, 3 BB's, 19 innings, ERA 0.95). They also have at third base Travis Shaw (35 K's, 24 BB's, .343 Ave, OPS .983) and perhaps the best of all center fielder Jackie Bradley (39 BB's, 29 K's, .374 Ave, OPS 1.061). Bradley is also regarded as the best defensive outfielder in the Red Sox system. Some of you may recall that he played for South Carolina against Uconn in the college world series. South Carolina went on to win it all and Jackie Bradley was named Most Outstanding Player and was a member of the All Tournament team.
The Sox are talking about not being able to sign Jacoby long term. Could Jackie be his replacement?

Bradley sounds interesting. The Sox need a star outfielder because the rumor is they are not going to sign Ellsbury.

They also may have the shortstop of the future as well if Iglesias doesn't hit. Xander Bogaerts is a 21 year old shortstop from Aruba. He is supposed to be excellent defensively and has good size - 6' 3" 175 lbs. He hit 16 home runs in a half season last year with Greenville.

Bogaerts is 19.

From the Boston Globe:

"Matt Barnes, the 19th overall pick in 2011, threw six shutout innings for Single A Salem against Winston-Salem. He is 5-1 with a 1.04 ERA in 11 starts. Over 60.2 innings this season, Barnes has allowed 38 hits, walked eight and struck out 81. Yes, eight walks and 81 strikeouts.
The righthander from UConn looks every bit like a future ace."
Who knew that Barnes may turn into a pitching ace after his first year at UConn. How times change! I still can't believe it...60.2 IP, 81 Ks. That's absurd.

Barnes may move up to Portland if he continues to dominate.

I think Barnes and Bradley will move up soon. It will be a good test. Advanced A to double A is a big jump for many. Generally, the Eastern league is a pitchers league.

I don't understand why the Sox aren't moving Jackie Bradley up. His average is now .388 and he has hit .514 over the last 10 with an OPS of 1.352. He is treating the Carolina League like LaBron treated the Celtics last night.

Looks like it might be time to promote Barnes and get him to a level where he'll be more challenged, up at AA:.

Since his promotion to High A Salem - 7 starts, 41 innings, 1.32 era, 0.92 era, 44K/7 BB (6.28/1 ratio)

And remember Ryan Kalish, the big prospect a couple years ago who had neck/shoulder surgeries and was out over a year? We may be seing him in a Boston uniform soon in CF or RF... since he's come off the DL and sent to AAA Pawtucket - 10 for 16, 2 2B, 3 HR, 5 BB/2K

The Sox system is pretty damn good right now. Imagine if they didn't lose Westmoreland a year ago to the brain tumor. I saw one "expert" list him in their top 15 prospects in baseball at the time he went down. Son of a....

The Salem team is loaded. Their shortstop, 19 year-old Xander Bogaerts, is now the top shortstop prospect in the organization IMO. He is probably not as good defensively as Iglesias but he can hit and hit with power. Iglesias seems to have a tough time staying on the field. He has missed a lot of games due to injuries. He probably won't be ready for a year or two.
Kalish should be able to help now. I agree, that it might be time to move Barnes up again. Sad about Westmoreland but he is so young that he may be able to come back.
