Not only would we need to go undefeated, we would need a similar scenario to this past season where there are very few P-2 schools with two or fewer losses.

We may even need to have an inordinate number of P level schools with four or more losses as (shy of our having a few wins over ranked opponents) a three loss P level school would likely be viewed as having had a better resume than us, even with no losses.

One detriment to being independent under this set of rules is that our slot in the CFP (if we were to be deserving) would be at the expense of a P level school making the playoffs. The highest rated G level conference champ is guaranteed a spot so our making it would put two G schools in the playoffs.

I think you are underestimating us. Not saying we would be selected but a lot would depend on the scenario. If we were 12-0 and, let’s say Syracuse won the ACC or got to their championship game even. We’d absolutely be in the discussion. Maybe even at 11-1 depending on who the 1 loss was. Just to be clear, I don’t expect the Orange to win the ACC nor us to be 12-0. But if we were and they were we’d absolutely be under consideration.

True - if a team isn’t P4, the only realistic shot is getting the automatic bid as the highest rated G5 conference champion.

to see rutgers in the 9 win tier makes me laugh my face off.
then i cry.

why oh why did the old big east have to fold.

12-0.

Would not be surprised to see an 11-1 Boise State in over us, especially if their only loss is Notre Dame. You really need Notre Dame to just tank, then chaos the rest of the way. Also a 12-1 AAC conference champ might also get in over us if it’s Tulane, Memphis, Army, or Navy.

It’s not something to think about right now.

We don’t even get a check from the CFP. I don’t think they are obligated to take us even if we win a zillion games.

With our schedule, we would have to blow everyone out. 12-0 isn't enough, even if there were a bunch of 4 loss teams. Now, if the average margin of victory was like 30 and no win was by less than 14 maybe then we'd be in the discussion

12-0 with all our P4 opponents in might do it. Not sure if that is even mathematically possible, but there it is.

Hope that would get it done but I tend to doubt it.

I think more likely, they’ll only take the one automatic G5 conference champ - ever if that team’s ranked lower than 12-0 UConn as independent. And all the at large spots would go to a P2, Note Dame & maybe a couple 1 or 2 loss teams from the B12 or ACC.

Never estimate the power of an underdog story. If we win every game this season, we will be in the CFP conversation, ESPN will host Gameday at the Rent before the Air Force game, and 30 for 30 will starting shooting B-roll around the football complex.

True, but if by some miracle the chips fall the right way, we go undefeated and land a spot, we don't have to split whatever our take is with anyone.

12 and 0, nothing less .... AND just about all the games have to be decisive victories

It’s not something to think about right now.

(i'm saying this with all respect and humor)

if not now, then when? when we're 5-3 and soundly out of any conversation?
i feel like this is the ONLY time to think about it lol... the sky's the limit in the summer!

CFP Championship 2026:

I don't think independents are considered for the G5 spot. We would fall under the Notre Dame rule. We'd need to be well within the top 10. Probably no lower than 7th.

They would do everything in their power to pick someone else. We'd need to go 12-0 and beat one of the other schools in the field, a conference champ or one of the near locks, and blow out everyone else. A close game against Buffalo would be enough of an excuse.
