How ex-UConn quarterback David Pindell's professional football journey landed him in Japan: 'Thankful' (Mike Anthony)

TIL: American football is played in Japan.
It's pretty cool because all the athletes work for the company. Some of them have do nothing jobs and others end up in pretty high positions after they're done playing.
 
Good for Pindell. Pretty high COL in JP, but a great opportunity being paid to play, open eyes and broaden mind(s) experiencing a different culture, etc.

No surprise, US GIs introduced Yank football post-WW II to the Land of the Rising Sun. A university league also exists.

IIRC, Jake Guidone, last season’s center, Dartmouth (and UConn) alumnus played with an Ivy all-star team against a combined Japanese pro and university team.

It actually started in the 1930s, caught on a bit. Stopped because something pretty big happened and then picked up again in 1945.
 
I remember it like yesterday. We were on vacation on Long Island and I was sitting in the car listening to the game.

The Boise State announcer: "And Piendel drops back to pass, but now he is up the middle on a QB draw and NO ONE is gonna catch him!!! That guy has some serious wheels!!!
 
That’s pretty cool. I wonder if he’s in contact with Gavin Edwards.
 
With a semi-competent defense those teams could have gone bowling
We were a one man tean with Pindell. Lousy, disinterested coach. That squad wasn't going anywhere.
 
My favorite memory of Pindell is when he went 80 yards right up the middle for a TD against Cuse and silenced the crowd in the Dome.
