If you're thinking that Bridgeport had to be one of UConn's most impressive regionals ever, you're right.
The Huskies beat MD and KY by an average of 28 points. How does that compare to past regionals? Really well. Going back to 2001 (that's as far back as I could get using uconnhuskies.com archives) our Avg MoV when we won the regional was 19.9. In 2010, we had a mind boggling 39 point Avg MoV (over Fla St and Iowa St). 2013's 28.0 is next on the list. Next best after that was 21.5 in 2009 (over California and ASU). The justifiably vaunted 2001-02 team had an avg MoV of 18.5 against Penn St and ODU.
Most impressive thing is that it was done against two very good teams--it would be very hard to argue that UConn faced stronger competition in years past. In fact past competition was almost certainly weaker.
As Geno said post-game this team is schizophrenic. When they're not playing well, they lose three times to a very good but not great Notre Dame team. No disrespect to ND. Muffet McGraw is as good a coach as there is in my opinion--hands down coach of the year. ND has risen to the occasion and performed their best in the clutch. They deserved all three wins. But let's face it, we haven't brought our A game against ND. When this team DOES bring its A game, it is, as Geno would say, really, really good.
Let's hope they bring their A game two more times. If they do, they will make Boneyarders very happy.
