How Do I Get Html To Work?

I have always possessed a half-asssed ability to do trivial things with HTML
In every evolution of the Boneyard. My code is now merely printed on the message.
I've tried the CODE box both general and HTMLM with no luck.
What am I doing wrong?

• How would I center the word "center" ?

There are three alignment boxes on the bar above where you enter the text of a post. It is easier to use them rather than mess around with the HTML code (which I have always struggled with as well).
