How critical is 3 point shooting?

These have been our 3-pt. shooting totals in 5 of the past 10 games:
Florida 4-15
Butler 5-24
Marquette 5-24
Seton Hall 3-17
Georgetown 5-26

Obviously cause for concern, but how big? Very few of our 3 point attempts seem to be "bad shots", which makes it even more concerning.

Loving this 18-1 ride so far, but certainly looking for areas to improve on. Thoughts BY?

That's more an issue of consistency than anything for 3 point shooting.

The other five were:
DePaul - 6/15
PC - 18/32
X - 13/28
DePaul - 6/18
Texas - 6/16

Need to be consistently above 33%. UF wasn't bad but the other four were definitely bad shooting games. The plus side UConn has pretty stable inside scoring at the five and with Silas. That plus the defense will win a lot of games by itself.

However, against some of the best teams (FF level teams) shooting will be needed.

Right now I'd worry more about TO's and FT shooting though.

Analytics basically ignores what defense they are facing, which is obviously a silly assumption. Every defense is designed to contest the perimeter now, and teams close hard on shooters, with help designed to meet penetration at the rim.

Teams are going to have to give defenses more to adjust to or even good three point shooting teams will have bad games from deep. I think mid range has to be added back to offensive game plans or offenses will take a lot of contested threes.

It’s obviously hugely important if we want to go deep in March. The 2024 super team was able to overcome somewhat mediocre 3 point shooting but not many champions can. Also it’s more about hitting clutch 3s IMO. Look at Florida last year. Felt like they were down and out several times until Clayton saved them game after game.

3's are just high variance, even the best shooting teams suffer from this which is why to be 'bulletproof' you have to pair 3's with at-rim shots and dunks. if they can use the threat of the 3 to have a lot more cuts to the rim and shoot 70% on 2's then it's not as big of an issue to not shoot well. however this part of the offense has been inconsistent at best with some stretches of no offense.

Important within a balanced offensive attack and when taken in the flow of the offense, allowing for offensive rebounds.

The book on UConn is to muck up, impede, disrupt, grab, and delay the motion offense. Even though the team's offense takes time, this slows it down further. There are a number of three point attempts that are taken late in the shot clock...and hence it adversely effects overall shooting percentages.

The way to beat this is back cuts, but the team does not seem to be able to see many that are available.

Very few of our 3s being “bad shots” should make it less concerning because that means we’re hopefully due for positive regression. Poor shot selection would be a tougher thing to fix

It's not on one person game to game, like Georgetown no one could buy a basket, but Solo has taken the most 3s of any player on the team and is below 30%. If he can consistently shoot anything from 2-6 to 3-7 from 3s game to game that's all they need. The 1-7, 0-5, 2-8 performances are what kill what this team tries to do on offense. Most of his looks are good, but what happens is when he misses a couple then he starts forcing shots that aren't there.

He just needs a higher floor and more consistency. Just become a 35% shooter rest of way and that will open things up; anything above and beyond that is gravy and pushes this team into juggernaut territory.

Solo Ball shoots like he is in a pickup game and is worried he will not see the ball again if he passes it.

He needs to stop some of the crazy shots and his percentage will go up. Too many dribble into defenders pull-ups, turnaround 3 attempts, and stuff like when he ends up clumped on offense, launching a wild attempt. Shoot in rhythm off the catch, and his percentage will climb.

Solo was mostly a catch and shoot guy but this year he's taken more initiator role and as a result his shot mix and general behavior has changed drastically. they actually don't need him to carry the offense just hit his shots when he's open.

You cherry picked the bad games. I think the 3 point shooting has been fine. Especially since Mullins has been back.

I think it makes it less concerning. I’d be much more concerned if we were having trouble creating looks or taking bad shots.

It can be critical, but it can be overcome with good defense.
The good 3 point shooting was critical against PC. The one thing that has been mentioned is that the vast majority of them have been good shots, within the tempo of the offense. That means they are still working a team's defense and can still wear them down in the end.

they need high percentage 2's to cash in the dilemma created by the motion offense. generating openish 3's is good but the offense becomes truly deadly when we can get the slips and cuts to the rim. the staff probably working on this right now.

We haven't really been playing inside-out which generates high quality 3pt looks. Tarris is getting tunnel vision when we're feeding him in the low post, similar to what was happening with Adama. AK's only successful 3 against Georgetown was on a rare pass from Tarris.
