Make a rule and college coaches will abuse it. Holgorson encouraged star players, including QB King, to redshirt after a 1-3 start. One senior player calls them out for purposely tanking. He won’t get his season back, but Houston won’t get their QB back either as he’s now entered the transfer portal. I hope more do the same to Holgorson and staff.

How Houston used redshirts to tank in college football

Lesson Learned
Best players must play, can not plan or worry about the roster in 3 or 4 years.
No voluntary, player initiated RS, unless agreement to play with UConn the following year. Let them quit team and scholarship.

A few will graduate in 3 years or use RS as to cover transfer. Good for them, I think the freedom for the individual players is more important than roster continuity for a school. But quitting mid-year on teammates, coaches, and fans, while schools are providing opportunity and education should not allowed.

The players didn't quit. This was staff coordinated and it bit them. In August, Houston was looking at a promising season (NYD6 potential), but started out 1-3. Holgorson asked upperclassmen to take mulligan, redshirt, come back for their 4th year old eligibility.

Saw that King signed with Miami. Interesting to see how that plays out with some of their other underclass men QBs ( Tate Martell in particular)
