I’m hoping to start a thread that will surpass the pizza thread with stories that will make us laugh or cry.
Let’s face it, pizza is just dough, sauce and toppings and look at the number of posts.
I’m organizing my disasters and will later post.

When The Warden and I are out in the yard digging, planting, raking, etc. I often just yell out "OVER 55 COMMUNITY!"

Next week we are off and replacing several rotten trim boards is on the agenda. I'm sure that will be easy. 🙄

People that stop with their dog and let them piss and leave a yellow patch. Good news is with Ring and in a circle condo complex I’ve caught a couple. It won’t happen again at least not with their mutts.
funny story. guy i know kept finding dog poop in his yard. He eventually saw the guy that was stopping and not picking up his dog's business. Next time the guy walk by, my buddy came out and was very cordial and chatting, then asked the guy where he lived. When pooper's dad answered the question by saying whatever street, my buddy asked, how would you like it if I came over to your house and took a $hyt on your lawn every morning....never saw the guy again

Been trying to make the lawn look decent but there are spots that won’t grow grass. Landscaper put new topsoil/loam in there last year (and new seed) that was so rich he said he could grow me a tomato in a month. Grass came up nice. This year dead again. Is there nuclear waste in my yard?

Stab a long screwdriver in there--could be a big rock 4 or 5 inches below the surface.

Have the soil tested. It might just needs some lime.

I have a big vine (oriental bittersweet?) that has grown up 20+ ft in a pine. I fought my way thru the rotos growing around it to find the vine was 1"+ in diameter! I cut it, but couldn't pull the vine down as it had grown to be inter-twined with the tree. Any suggestions?

I had perpetual ground yellowjackets. Every year, I would forget that they were there, run over their nest with my mower, and get stung 492829 times. That house is gone due to life's throat punch, and I miss that house immensely, but I do not miss those freaking bees.
Found new hole in lawn - probably due to roof gutter drain tank - with bees. Used hornet spray which caused a lot of comotion. I'll check today to see how that worked.

I have found those sprays don't do a thing for yellowjackets. I must've sprayed 5x last year before I finally just poured a cup of gasoline down there and got rid of them. I thought it would kill the grass but it was fine.

Clip any live vine at the base of the tree. It'll die, then dry out. That's when you can pull it off the tree.

Check other trees nearby. I have vines jumping from tree to tree. In the Oct storm in 2011 I had one tree come down, and it pulled other trees with it because they were tied together by bittersweet vines.

You weren't specific enough...you did light it on fire after dumping it down the hole, correct? Because that's how my Dad taught me to get rid of the ground nests (use mixed 2-cycle gas). Wait until evening when they're [almost] all back in there,. Works like a charm and infinitely satisfying.

this ^^

When we bought our first house there was a nice green border with neighbors. After moving in realized it was mostly vines growing up trees. Some very big.

Tree guy said need to cut down and start over. Spent a weekend checking all the trees and ground cover for vines. Cut them all. Once dried was able to remove. Looked a bit sparse for a summer but then trees filled in nicely

Be sure to keep an eye out as the vines will come back.

If you are brave and like carnage, a gas powered trimmer running at full speed right over the yellow jacket hole will take them out. And vines suck, just keep cutting them low. They die.

Do tell
OK, and I don’t take credit because a pest control guy did it first in my yard. First cut 6 inch newspaper squares. Then put a teaspoon of peanut butter in the middle. Then get those green Tomcat mouse or rat poison cubes and cut them up and swish some pieces into the peanut butter.
Draw up the sides and twist at the top. Now go to active tunnels open and put the pouch in the tunnel leaving the top protruding and cover well around it. You can also put a stick or flag in that spot. I made 25 of these pouches and did tunnels all over. Check day to day and you will see shredded newspaper over the hole ( that means they ate it) Repeat over a week or so until no more shredding. Trust me this works. I understand that dogs in the yard would not be good so keep them out while doing this.

This isn't a gripe, but a story that I never would have expected.

Beginning midsummer, I would occasionally see a black & white cat wandering through the cul-de-sac. I didn't think much of it, at first I thought the new neighbors (longtime neighbors sold their house in the spring) brought a cat with them and let it spend it's time outside.

About two weeks ago I stopped home for lunch and saw the cat running away when it saw my car. I thought nothing of it at the time. A couple days later, also at lunchtime I saw a dead chipmunk where the common driveway meets my driveway & the grass. I figured I'd need to get the shovel and dispose of it, but it was gone when I got back outside after eating lunch.

The next morning walking from my back deck to my car I saw a kitten that looked a lot like the cat start running to the bushes, followed by two other kittens.

Obviously the cat that had been wandering for a while had a litter and as there are some critters in the area, the chipmunk that I saw was most likely food for the kittens.

A couple days later, when I got home the four cats were by my back deck, the kittens ran quickly behind the mother, who started hissing at me. When she realized I wasn't going towards them she turned back to her kittens.

The next day, near where I saw them, I noticed a long bone that obviously was a rabbits hind leg, stripped of all meat except a little more than half of the foot with fur on it (i did slso have rabbits roaming the area).

While rabbits have little means of protecting themselves, those in my neighborhood are considerably larger than the cat. I can see how the cat was able to catch the rabbit but I am very curious as to how she killed it.

There have been no critters in my yard for more than a week and the cats have been gone for the same amount of time (likely moved on to new hunting grounds).

Cats are killers. I heard over 3 billion birds a year.

I cleared out a bunch of dead plants and shrubs in the front of my house and put down mulch so I have a blank canvas to add some new curb appeal. Unfortunately that was three years ago and I suck at landscape design so it’s still….a blank canvas.

You don’t have to be good at landscape design. Just take a photo of the front of your house, bring it to a nursery (not Lowe’s or Home Depot), show it to an “expert there and tell them which direction it faces, sunlight etc and they give you plant options and tell you where to put them. It’s worth the slightly higher price of the big box stores where you get no advice.
