Hot Take Aged Badly

Lindsay Schnell must not be a student of history—or a fan of the dictionary. Here's Merriam-Webster's definition: a dynasty is "a powerful group or family that maintains its position for a considerable time." She argues that, beginning in 2008, UConn made 14 straight Final Four appearances and won six national championships. But in 2023, they lost in the Sweet Sixteen, and therefore, their dynasty collapsed. But dynasties, like Rome, aren't built in a day, nor do they fall in one. I agree, @psconn. This hot take cooled off pretty quickly.

(I wonder if Lindsay is also responsible for the sudden overuse of the terms "generational" and "GOAT"...) :D

Leave GOAT out of this. As accolades go, GOAT is clearly the Greatest Of All Time. And none of this complaining I've heard lately that it's absurd to use it of more than one player. Of course it's absurd. What about college sports isn't absurd?

I believe that if Paige was healthy in '23 and Fudd in '24 , UConn would have played in two more additional championships and would have won one.
To say that a dynasty is dead because players are injured is just moronic.

GOAT has been driving me batty for a few years now, but "generational" seems to be what sportscasters now say when they mean "excellent" or even "very good."

Before Olivia Miles announced that she wasn't declaring for the WNBA draft, I read a draft forecast on The Athletic that called her a "generational passer." Olivia Miles is a great passer. She is one of the best passers in college basketball. But given that she is in the same generation as Caitlin Clark, Sabrina Ionescu, Paige Bueckers, etc., she is not, by definition, a generational passer. Words have meanings!

the losses in 17-19 are what killed things

I'm reminded of Mark Twain's quip when rumors spread that he had died: "The rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated."

I can do without ‘generational’. But no one is going to pry GOAT from my cold bony fingers. Paige Stewie Maya Diana — they’re all GOATs as far as I’m concerned. Sarah is the next GOAT in the making. Think of it, we’re living in one of those rare moments when two GOATs overlap.

And I deeply resent Tom Brady for actually being a singular GOAT. He totally ruined the word for football.

This. I keep wondering what Paige's most talented team was. 24, with a healthy Azzi would've been interesting. 23 is like my favorite what if team because of Lou and Dorka. I also think Caroline had some good moments that year as well. I know it's obvious but Paige against Ohio State is just a completely different game. Just in terms of how much their pressure rattled the team. A sneaky one is 21, if Azzi is allowed to play at UConn early like Olivia Miles and TVO. That scenario would've made 22 totally different. In any event, I can't lie I was a bit swept up in the "is UConn still UConn" thing. I knew it was short sighted. But I think it's kinda what Geno says about the UConn standard. U see the jerseys and the head coach and u just expect a certain level. It is not wise tho, I agree.

Bone dog As Lee Corso would say “not so fast my friend”. Mahomes will have ample chances to challenge the goat debate in the very near future.

'22 was Paige's most talented team, even though she was coming back from missing half the season. The starting line-up was Paige, Christin Williams, Fudd, Edwards and Nelson-Ododa. The back ups were Westbrook, Muhl and Dorka until she broke her wrist. They beat a #1 seed NC State and #1 Seed Stanford before losing to South Carolina.

Of course, because everybody knows that Greatest= One of Many. ;):p:p

Hot take, but this take is fine.

The UConn dynasty did die. And that's fine. It doesn't mean UConn is over, nor does it mean another dynasty can't emerge.

If UConn rattles off another 2 championships in the next 2 years, then they will have started a new dynasty.
