Warde Manual hasn't figured out the his job requires actual hard work directed at accomplishing something other than his own personal entertainment.

He's representing the University and the State not on a vacation of his own choosing. Give him some time folks, this is a tough situation and we aren't buried yet.

What you don't understand, is what his job is. He's doing it. I think his boss knows about it. What makes any of you think you have even the slightest clue what he should be doing?

The lawyers will handle Geno's contract. There are also people who work in the AD's office and I'm sure they handle a few things...as in most things. That's how it works. Does the mayor of your town collect the garbage and fill the potholes? Get real people.
He is on a corporate paid junket. There is zero reason to be there other than inspect the sweat shops that make NIKE . Sorry, but improving relations between UConn sports and communist China seems less relevant than perhaps traveling to the Midwest and South establishing relations with people who matter.

This guy is livin large traveling and stuffing his big bloated fat face on OPM

.-.
BlueDogs, You don't have a clue.
That's a mighty powerful argument. You really got me. There is zero reason for Warde Manuel to be in China. None. He is not on a trade mission, nor is that even in the realm of his capabilities or responsibilities. This a classic state employee corporate paid junket. This is classic government waste and abuse. I'm sure he's collecting a pay check for doing nothing other than some sham meetings and being feted.

I agree with the article in that our current "UConn" font is the best in the country. There's even a local athletic uniform manufacturer here in the LA area who uses the font. Unilete.com

We used them and the font for our basketball league jerseys. They came out fantastic.

Being one of 7 schools that Nike promotes globally isn't his job? As I said, then you don't understand his job. It is to raise money and promote UConn athletics. Contracts, searching for hockey coaches, that falls to staffers.

I hear they have some of the best Chinese food in the world over there...

That's a Ken Krayeske-esque (say that three times fast) assertion. Care to provide evidence for your claim of "sham meetings"? Or do you expect everyone else to accept as reality what you imagined in your head?

I'll add, I am skeptical on the value of this trip, but that's because we don't have enough information to make a judgment one way or another. Rather than jumping to conclusions based on previously held assertions (WARDE BAD!) I'll wait till more information comes out. (Though on the matter of conference realignment I reserve the right to make wild-ass speculations based on scant evidence).

Honestly, some of you just should not read the internet ever.

It's too much information and you have too much trouble trying to get your heads around it. Ditto for the dopey chick hoops writer.

Our AD is going on a trip with one of our largest corporate benefactors.

Why? I dunno, but you generally accommodate such people and the last I heard, China has telephones and computers and internets and all sorts of stuff that makes it easy to contact the rest of the world - even Connecticut!

I just hope that Geno doesn't get mad and start looking around at better jobs like....ah, you know, whatever jobs are better than UConn in women's hoops. Those jobs!
Good for him. Tell what. . . have Warde convince Nike to "influence $$$" one of the major conferences to offer a slot to UConn and we'll call off the dogs.

Good points - all!!!!

Now there's a thought.

Dude. Come on. Use your practial experience. How many corporate meetings have you been part of the accomplish anything. How many corporate junkets, industry shows, "seminars", and conferences have you attended? The vats majoirty are do a little work and do a lot of play. Did the GSA and US Federal Judge coneference scandals tell you anything? What can possibly be done over there. Lets get real. Is he negotiating a technology trade deal with the PLA? What are we negotiaying volume discounts on Footballs and Basketballs? Im sure the libe will be to evaluate the developing sports program status in China, and learning whther there are any novel systems or things that they are doing that we can emulate, and also sharing our expriences with them. Bull$hit. He is there to kiss some and make nice, nice with a bunch of communist officials so Nike can show how capable they are of bringing "important people" to visit. Happens all day long. Good God, its fascinating how many people willingly suspend rational belief in favor of hoping something magical is going on.

Easy fellas, he´s really a secret agent monitoring the Chi-Coms for Obama.

'Ward´s a man who leads a life of danger...'
To every conference change he is a stranger...
With every move they make, he monitors a steak
Odds are we won´t live see tommorow.

Se-cret AD Man, Secret AD Man
Well UConn's days are numbered
And we don't know his plan...

Post of the day. Not only did I laugh out loud, I also broke into spontaneous applause. "With every move they make, he monitors a steak" -sheer literary genius.

Are you really dumb enough to think that Geno's contract is at some sort of cliffhanging impasse that requires our athletic director to sit and stare at one particular phone just in case it rings?

Honestly, the chick hoops guy is a dolt, but you're a garden-variety genius if you actually think that's the case.

Come on, a lot of you are going to have to do a better job of faking some level of sophistication if this whole message board idea is to succeed.

Agree re Geno's contract but disagree regarding missing the conference meeting. I kind of like for our AD to pretend that he has a say in what's going on in the conference. We may be stuck on the Island of Misfit toys for a while. We might as well be the flying lion rather than whiney Charley in a box.

Thanks. I had an English professor who wrote a lot about humor. His thesis was that there is no humor that isn't at the expense of some person or institution. I thought about that for a long time, and finally concluded that he was right. So even when I'm uncomfortable with poking fun at someone, I just think of ol' professor whats-his-name and I feel better. I truly hope WM does great things for the school, but to deny that he is a potentially rich source of comedy would be wrong. No hard feelings Warde...

I am glad you don't work for my company.

Im glad too if it is 118th out of 121 in performance, was one a rising leader and now a minor and shrinking player in its field, blamed untalented employees for its failures, stuck with managers that have unsatisfcatry performance, and top level executives were flying around on travel with no mission or vision. But, thats just me.

If you were able to understand nuance, you'd know you have vastly oversimplified my positions. But to someone who sees the world as black and white, nobody else is capable of complexity, either. So enjoy arguing with the person you've imagined. I'm sure you'll win. You probably always do.

I love how you guys sit there and tell us that we don't know nothing about running businesses and so on when we critic Ward. I put money that Tom Jurich would cancel that trip and work his arse off to make sure his athletic program was in the best possible position.... Louisville was a mid major for crying out loud and look at them now and look at us now.. this clown shows no leadership, no vision and no respect for athletics.
Some of you are starting to sound like Dez for Ward as he is for PP.

Alright, which one of you guys let Warde out of his cage again... Was it you, UconnDan97? Fishy? Nobody lets Warde out of his cage until we have a new football staff and are in the B1G!

It was me. I let him out on the assumption that he would leave the country. I had no idea that he would return! ;)

Actually it was more Governor Malloy's doing.

Booyah.

Next.

Hmm.

One person ran one of the largest programs in the sport while at Michigan and directly helps decide what sports the school sponsors. The other is a politician.

Gov. Malloy WANTED Hockey East. Warde is the one who made it work. He gets the credit here.

Haha. My guess is he's doing something a little higher level than negotiating volume discounts on football. I don't know. But you don't either. I'd say let's find out some facts instead of speculating and applying your (apparently non-productive) business travel experience to someone else's job, but a) they're probably not going to release too many details of the actual important meetings b) even if they do you'll no doubt use it to somehow support your pre-existing conclusions. You're probably right that there will be a bunch of unnecessary ceremony and backslapping. That doesn't preclude the mere possibility that there could be something positive for UConn as well. I'll speculate that there will be other ADs and representatives from other Nike schools there. It might be a good environment to get some intel, make new contacts and maybe lay the groundwork for some conference realignment moves. Or talking to those people might identify some new candidates for football coordinators. But you'd rather he not do that because that would involve kissing, I guess. Yes I am speculating and making * up but so are you.
