  • MVP – Joan Joyce, Raybestos Brakettes (8-1, 7 Shutouts, 2 no hitters, 1 ER, 70 IP, 134 K; batting stats- 12-29, .414, 2 Runs, 6 RBI – drove in winning runs in 2-0 final)
  • Bertha Tickey Pitching MVP Award – Joan Joyce, Raybestos Brakettes (1-0, 9-inning, 1-hit shutout/20 Ks in first game, then, a 2-0, 2-hit shutout/14 K in final game). She set the all time record for innings pitched (69 2/3) and total strikeouts (134). She had games of 22, 20, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 12 and 10 strikeouts to reach her 134 total. She averaged close to 17 strikeouts per game.

It is impressive. I believe she also has another no hitter (though not a perfect game) this season. There are usually a couple of diamonds in the rough in NCAAW softball that aren't on the favored teams each season. Unfortunately, their teams usually don't have the supporting players to get far into the tournament so we don't get to see them play too often.

She pitched the beyond perfect softball game. A seven inning perfect game in which she struck out all 21 batters she faced. A record for Division 1 softball.
Given bunters and slappers, striking out entire team is truly difficult. It requires selecting and completing pitches to fit individual batters, at least that is what this old (very old) pitching coach thinks. Years ago they increased pitching distance to give batters more of a chance; it just gave pitchers additional length to throw more deadly screws and curves.

While striking out 21 out of 21 is impressive, the better stat is retiring the side on 3 pitches. Team. Good pitching combined with good fielding combined with good pitch selection. I bought my granddaughter/pitching student a new glove when she did it in a tournament travel game.

Get Hal Steinbrenner on the line. Yanks' lamentable pitching rotation (minus Cole) could use her.
