Question for the 'Yard about Hoopgurlz rankings.
As I understand it, Hoopgurlz is defunct. However, you can still access the old ratings via search. They assign players a numerical score that goes up to 99. As far as I know only Griner ever got a 99. Usually one or two players got a 98. Three players got the 98 in class of 2013 (DeShields, Russell, Davis) and nine (!!!) got a 98.
So here is my question. Is the class of 2014 really that good? Or, did Hoopgurlz standards loosen over the years? 'Cuz if the standards didn't change then the 2014 class really is shaping up to be a monster, with both Gabby W and Ekmark getting the coveted 98 and still in the running for A'ja Wilson (98) and Sierra Calhoun (97). I know that there are more up to date rankings that put Sadie Edwards higher up and drop some folks down. But the point remains.
Just to give a flavor on what a 98 seems to mean ... from what I can tell, between class of 07 and class of 12 only seven players got that rating. I'm a little unsure here, as the Hoopgurlz ratings would change over time and when I locate old Hoopgurlz data (pre 2012) I'm not sure I'm always locating the final rankings (EDD never got up to a 98 for example?) That said the seven I could find with a 98 rating were Maya, Kelsey Bone, Chiney, KML, Liz Williams, Breanna, and MoJeff. That's a small data sample, but that just points out how special the 98 rating is (was). Based on this list, a 98 suggests a better than 50/50 chance of ending up as a first team AA, with either four or five falling into that category (Liz Williams being the question mark IMO).
So, anyone know the answer? Is the class of 2014 really that good?
