While I've been frustrated with Caroline's play in the big games; it's also been really sad to see her relegated to the bench in the last moments of her UConn career.
Lost in our ruthless storms of criticism are the memories of Caroline's greatness and potential before her second and third ACL's. I remember the freshman Caroline who became one of the few UConn players to break into the starting lineup. The one who broke the UConn record for consecutive 3-point made, in going a perfect 6-of-6 on national television in a win over No. 4/4 Oklahoma, later extending it to 10 consecutive. The emerging star who then hit four three-pointers in the first six minutes against Syracuse.
I then found the following in Adamec's article about Senior Day: (http://snyuconn.com/uconn/uconn-senior-class-trip-from-colorado-to-storrs/)
Doty played for USA White.
“We were good,” Doty said.
Why were they good? USA White’s guards included Doty, her future UConn teammate Tiffany Hayes, former Ohio State player Samantha Prahalis and the reigning Big East Player of the Year Skylar Diggins out of Notre Dame. The front line was led by Texas A&M’s Kelsey Bone and former Maryland player Lynetta Kizer.
Hayes and Doty were the top scorers on a club that averaged 98.6 points in its five games and had an average margin of victory of 17.0 points. USA White placed seven players in double figures in a 103-88 win over USA Blue for the gold medal.
Reading about this makes me extremely sad for Caroline, but also gives me great admiration for the spirit that keeps her going, committed to her team and teammates. I hope we remember this, as we watch Caroline play or see her sitting on the bench...and before we let our competitive spirit overwhelms our memories of our Caroline.
