Wow! For what seemed like a long time, it appeared the ladies would be outscored 7 to 10 for the first quarter. Thank goodness the defense tightened up and their shots started falling instead of rimming out. Defense in the 3rd quarter was incredible and left the Crusaders reeling. A (so far) unusual 42% 3FG rate (with the mostly second team hitting 62% in the 4th quarter!) put the game away.

There's defenseive lapses where there are too many players going to help on a slasher, leaving 2 (and once 3) opponents open on the outside, and failures boxing out by pretty much everybody. And I don't understand why Kaitlyn twice found a clear track under the basket across the baseline without putting up a shot. Not the only one to pass up open shots, though. Guess they're having trouble hearing Geno on that topic.

In the end, happy for the grit they showed against a determined defense, not being rattled when the Crusaders shot 70% for the 2nd quarter, that 3rd quarter swarming defense, and Geno giving everyone a chance to show what they have in a competitive (for 2.5 quarters) game.

Note: I've put the minimum required minutes on court back to 100. Morgan, Azzi, Q, and Allie are thus not yet eligible for the grid.

Again, so many thanks for these charts each game! They provide a means of assessing individual performance on a truly comparable basis. While no particular form of analysis is absolutely perfect, this is about as ideal as we can expect.

In reviewing the latest stats, I am again failing to understand why Geno continues to give more minutes to Ice over Jana. In nearly every category, points, rebounds, fouls, turnovers, both on a per game and a per 40 basis, Jana contributes more and fails less than Ice with the one significant exception being assists, where Ice is way ahead. If Ice were the taller and more physical of the two, maybe I could understand his giving her nearly 50% more minutes, but we know that isn't the case. Based on size alone, even if her stats were not so clearly superior, I would have expected Geno to, as I said in a different thread, force feed Jana with more minutes to build up her experience and to shed the rust from her year-long forced absence. I am just bewildered!

Well said but who are we to question the winningest coach in college basketball? There has to be a reason but to us loyal bystanders makes us scratching our heads.
Could it be that instead of "throwing her in the fire" and putting her starting at 5 after not playing for so long he wants to bring Jana along slowly to work out the rust? Or perhaps is he not seeing in practice what he said about her so glowingly in interviews during the summer? Maybe some BY'ers can chime in with better insight. We all can see is a player who is working hard to be effective both on offense and defense when she is on the floor.

You may be misreading some of the stats. Brady turns the ball over less and provides way more assists, which of course also means the A/T ratio is much better. While El-Affy scores more their shooting percentages are close, much closer than their disparity in facilitating others. This is significant in that Strong shoots better than either Brady or El-Affy, and she has a better chance of being fed the ball with Brady in the line up than El-Affy.

Before the season started I thought Brady and El-Affy would be the posts and Strong would come off the bench at the beginning like M. Moore and Taurasi did. I thought Strong would be the best of the three, but Auriemma has shown a preference for starters that are competent and experienced when available, even if they are not the best starting five individually. Right now Brady is the only post that fits that bill. I thought El-Affy would start for much the same reason as you I suspect, but I was wrong. Strong plays like an upperclassmen.

It could be that El-Affy eventually gets more minutes, but I doubt she will start this year. She does have to facilitate better and make less mistakes to surpass Brady in minutes, because right now Brady has a significant edge with that.

I did make a point of Ice's significant lead over Jana when it comes to assists. But I believe she gets more dimes because when the ball comes inside to Jana, her instinct is to score not to pass it back outside which Ice does because she either doesn't have the instinct or the confidence to follow up and score.
