Downtown Nashville on Broadway. More bars and restaurants than you can handle. People watching here is fun as well.

This, go to the Grand Ole Opry, especially if the show is at the Ryman Hall. The original facility located in downtown

Buy tickets early. And buy them on the Grand Ole Opry website. There are almost always tickets available and much less than the secondary markets

Went there when we took on (and lost to) Vanderbilt in football years ago. Fun times, met and hung out with Cornelius Benton and Glenn Antrum for most of the weekend.

The one thing that struck me was that you can walk into any bar and you’ll hear great live music.
 
Make sure to stop in Robert’s Western World for a fried baloney sandwich. Sandwich, chips, a moon pie and a PBR for like 5.00? Awesome place.

I used to live in Nashville for a bit, there are some places you should and shouldn’t go but it all depends on what you want to do and who you’re going with.

If you like mainstream bars and crowds stick to Broadway. If your goal is find women, stick to Broadway but be prepared to buy drinks for bridesmaids. Your personality will get you nothing on that street.

If you like lower key, I’d suggest Printers Alley. Blues/Bones and Boogie is a great blues bar with very good talent, cover charge but the bar is very unique and memorable. Fleet St has great food in an oddly enough UK-style pub.

As for places to see the Ryman is cool if you’re a music fan. I did not like any of the museums - too touristy for me. Catch a Preds game at the Bridgestone, it’s a very good venue. Titans games are fun too but they won’t be playing when you’re there.

If you’re staying on the other side of 40 past the Gulch, go to the bars near Vanderbilt. At least tour Vanderbilt - it’s a great campus. Their basketball arena is very interesting and is a must-see if they’re playing.

Don’t go to Hattie B’s it is overrated. If you like beer go to Bearded Iris, they sometimes do collabs with big craft breweries and usually have good stuff. If your goal is a bender, stick to the light stuff or you’ll have the shakes by day 3.

For food stick to the barbecue or American-style spots. Don’t go for anything pizza or Italian. That should go without saying.

If you want more recs DM me, but don’t go north of the Doubletree into Buena Vista.

Terrible advice for a first timer. Broadway IS Nashville. It's like nothing else in any other city. It's a must.
My hot take: Skip the Grand Ol' Opry. It's brutally bad, even if you try to take it in ironically. I chose it over Broadway on my trip to Nashville and I regret it to this day.

I love ya @Waquoit. But this statement is doodoo.
Broadway is as much Nashville as times square is nyc.
(But..it is a must see for sure);

Not just bar…anyplace. Hotel lobby, food court downtown….and they don’t get paid. Just tips!!

If all I want to do is drink stay on Broadway. We toured the Ryman which is cool. Saw a show there too (more for the experience than the band).

We got that skip Broadway advice..glad we ignored it for a bit. Being above 50, we hit Broadway earlier in the evening. Great music everywhere. Newer bars are all celebrity branded but pretty monochromatic. We liked the older places with more character. The bologna sandwich isn’t fine dining but at midnight for $5 with a pbr it hit the spot

We also checked out the gulch to get off Broadway. The station inn is the oldest bluegrass bar in the country..so they claim

U can make of the trip want u want. Do Nothing all day/night but drink with music or tour around and see some of the history

We skipped the grand ole opry as it’s too far outside of town and we were only there for a long weekend

100% I don't hate on broadway. My wife works at bridgestone corporate and we're down there quite a bit.
When people come here to visit me it's the first place I have them go. If they love it, they usually only stay there. But on their return visits they usually want to explore.
We have neighborhoods just like Prospect park, Williamsburg, Astoria and the villages etc.
But those are usually explored after they do the downtown thing first.

Yeah, Times Square isn't New York for the first-timer. You can tell by how crowded it is, even in sub-freezing weather.

There's a reason touristy stuff like this is popular, it's fun. We don't really have a Broadway, Times Square, or Bourbon in Chicago but I love it when people come to visit because I get to take advantage of the touristy stuff I take for granted living here.

I second Printers Alley. The shuttle driver from our hotel recommended it. Spot on!

On Broadway, most bars have three floors and no elevators. Expect to do a lot of stair climbing.

The Belle Mead Plantation was well worth the time to visit.

I haven't been to Chicago in a while but wouldn't the Magnificent Mile kind of be the touristy thing to do similar to those places? Not really a party area but lots of stuff going on with lots of people around.
 
If you haven't been to Athens Greece, you can visit a full size Parthenon in Nashville. If you are into guitars, George Gruhn 's place is a mecca (Gruhn Guitars)

Most of the musicians you'll see play are uber talented. Go to some live shows or bars. imho, I found the Ryman shows a little tedious as another poster mentioned above.

Totally. You see your city with new eyes. I play a few gigs a year on broadway (I used to play a ton there before I had kids) and if you suspend judgement and just have fun like everyone else you actually start to enjoy life.
I was gonna ask you if you ever go to navy pier.
