I just wasn’t expecting him to spot me at the gym today.

Normally, several of us hoops junkies talk sports in between our sets. All decked out in Championship gear, dual title stuff, UConn sneakers, you name it. Of coarse, today I was running late and grabbed a Star Wars tee. No swag to brag.

Heard rumors, from a few of the trainers, there’s been an enemy among us. Some dude, who played for Syracuse, that comes in periodically. But who? Flynn, Devendorf, Mac, Warrick.

Do you recognize him from the top photo?

Well, today was the day. It’s been 16 years since he gave us a hard time. Shockingly, he couldn’t have been a nicer and more genuine guy. Orange and all.

I even gave him a hard time about March Madness, zone defenses, our schools 6 titles, and Jimmy Boheim. Dug the knife a bit. He had some fun responses about today’s game.

Wanted to know about my favorite UConn players, more about my son’s AAU team, and shared lots of memories from the 6 OT game and more. Growing up in Niagara, he was a big time recruit to keep in NY. 6-5 and a real bulldog. Had a bad ankle injury just after the Draft which hurt his NBA dreams. Eventually, he moved and ended up coaching in Connecticut.

As we teased each other and said goodbye, he comes back from his car with his phone. Says, “I wanna show you guys something.”

He had photos of hundreds of scholarship letters, including one from Coach Calhoun. Kept them all, and he uses them to inspire his son and guys in EYBL. “Coach Calhoun, that was my guy. Dyson, Sticks, Kemba. I liked all those guys. Rooted for you against Purdue,” lol

Nice to meet you, Paul Harris. Thanks for the memories.
