Had UCONN ever been ranked number 1 the year after winning the National Championship? I can’t remember but I think not. It feels like the program is in an all-time good place (and I’ve been a fan since the Dee Rowe era).

They were preseason #1 in 99-00 season following the '99 title. They lost to Iowa in game 1

Technically yes, they were preseason/week #1 in 2000-2001. Lost their first game to Iowa before beating Duke in their second. Dropped to #8.

And remember just a year ago there were many including some on this board who were doubting if Hurley was the right hire.

Yes, according to the UConn Media Guide:

We were AP No. 1 in November '99. Then it was all downhill from there.

How many people parroted "he hasn't won an NCAA game in 5 years??” which was always super disingenuous.

It’s always been Hurley or Bust for me but I understand your point.
I've always been in Hurley's corner, too. It's just some on the board have been on him, especially after the early exit a few years ago. I've said in several posts, Hurley wasn't and still is not a finished product as a coach. Coaches learn over time, too.

The person you're replying to called for Hurley to be fired at the half of the Iona game last year. I guess he's just pretending that was a bit now.

well, he wins close ones now so at least he’s got that down.

We had to be highly regarded during 04/05. Chaz, Boone, Armstrong, Marcus Williams, Rudy Gay, Rashad Anderson, D Brown..., I guess we were never ranked number 1

And 05/06 we may have been the number 1 overall seed

That's a good run, three seasons at or near the top

George Duckin Mason

Preseason #8 that year. Never got higher than 7 and lost to UMass in week 6.

In 05-06 we were ranked #1 for 5 weeks. Fun fact about that year only us and Duke were ever ranked #1 during the regular season (and then of course Florida won the whole thing).

Calhoun has admitted that the team had checked out and many were thinking about the next level instead of taking care of business. As well as George Mason played that day, the Huskies did a lot or I guess you could say didn't do a lot that affected the outcome of that game.

Fanbases can be spoiled. Decision makers with control over programs can also be spoiled. This was my fear with people being overly critical of Hurley. When you wonder about whether your coach is producing the desired results quickly enough, just keep Indiana in mind. UConn has 5 championships in 25 years, that will tend to warp your mind, and the last thing you want is presidents (who don't have a clue about sports) putting pressure on your AD because of all the complaints among the boosters, trustees, politicos, and the media. Kentucky, North Carolina and Duke can get away with it, but hardly anyone else.

I say that 2011 and 2014 titles replace the ones we should’ve won in 2006 and 2009.

The game was also played about 20 minutes from the GMU campus.
