i'm not referring to kids who transferred out like Sherwood, Robinson or Walker, but kids he actually decided NOT to recruit, and then in hindsight, wished he had. i was thinking maybe of some of the local Connecticut kids who he had more of a chance to hear about (maybe someone like Deshana Stevens from Stamford, CT) but i'm not sure if he has publicly ever said that, or even national kids he opted not to recruit but in hindsight wished he had.

there's a pretty famous news conference on the men's side where Calhoun was asked one too many times about letting Ryan Gomes (from Waterbury) get away and go to Providence (he also said that Gomes was 6'5", 260+ at the time, took 18 months to qualify, and he took Okafor and Butler instead). but JC said about 5 times in his answer that "yeah, I 'd up"

btw i'm also not referring to kids he simply was not aware of (Angel McCaughtry for example - who i don't think any college coaches were really aware of or recruited coming out of HS).

i'm sure there are kids UCONN fans and fellow BY'ers wished he recruited, but has Geno ever said "yeah i wished i'd looked closer at that kid" or something like that?

Alana Beard.

I believe Geno said to Pat that CD and Mickie should have been fired for missing her.

Thank goodness they missed

Don't think that's what eric is asking. He didn't opt out of recruiting Beard, they missed her altogether. I think eric is looking for someone they looked at and decided against, then later wished they hadn't.

If Geno felt he made a mistake in recruiting I don't expect to see him publicly naming names doesn't seem to be his style. Not the same as calling out one of his players publicly. Saying something like that is like a parent telling their child that they made a mistake having them. I just don't see it happening.

either/or. i was just curious. i'm sure we could probably look at players like Angel or Alana and figure that it's possible a good number of coaches missed them, including Geno and co... Ice pointed out what Geno said to Pat about missing out on Alana.

i'm not talking about kids he got and who subsequently left, i'm talking about kids he wished in hindsight he'd recruited harder. altho i do recall him making some comments about the mistakes in recruiting Liz, Kiana and Kia, but that wasn't where i was going with the post...

I think Shay Doron was one that Geno had wished he had gotten... I also think he wanted Tameka Randall as well. And, I am sure there are many he wanted but didn't get them...Chiney Okumike was one recently. But, not recruit someone who later he wished he had...I don't recall him ever saying so.

oh those are good ones too. i bet the list is a lot longer of kids he wanted but didn't get - heck, every kid who gets a schollie offer but opts to go elsewhere prolly falls into that category, eh?! btw, Semeka Randall or Tameka Johnson? i don't recall Tameka Randall :)

Geno has always spoken glowingly of Tamika Catchings.
As well he should. As should everyone. But it took UConn 14 years after Tamika graduated from high school to break through in recruiting Texas.

and now that the floodgates have opened... Jefferson, Brianna Turner... etc etc!

But she was originally from IL.

This is my honest opinion. Signing Taya Reimer would be a mistake for UConn. They would be much better if she were at Notre Dame. While she is big and versatile, I don't see that killer instinct. While it can be manufactured in some players, I just don't see it here. I think UConn would be better off if she ended up at Notre Dame because head to head, if I am Morgan Tuck, I know I will dominate her.

I'm also not saying she wouldn't be a great recruit for many teams, and I may eat crow on this by the time she's done with college. She will have some very good games in college, but at UConn I do not see the fit.

I also want to say that Mavunga's Brownsburg team lost as well in the first round of sectionals to Ben Davis 49-33. Mavunga was held to 7 points.

who's on Ben Davis? and do you know what Mavunga's rebound total was? I seem to recall that she is mostly an inside banger

.-.
I have not seen any numbers on Mavunga's rebound total. Ben Davis doesn't have that marquee name like they have in the past with Shyra Ely, Alex Bentley or Bria Goss.

They do have 6'3" Shawnece Teague - she will be going to IUPUI next year.

Rough crowd. How do you know the kids doesn't have the flu or was playing with a turned ankle?
.
Of course. I actually thought about precisely those conditions, believe it or not. Then again, I'm not a recruiter who would have to worry all night about just why I saw a lousy performance from my prospect when I flew 1,000 miles to watch the Kwatchee Kernels play in Kokomo.

I always think about this, Nan, whenever one of the Huskies has less than a sterling night and some posters go off on them.

It's the moral equivalent of the fundamental attribution error in psychology. The fundamental attribution error speaks to our tendency to judge people's core qualities based on what we observe rather than accounting for circumstances. So if someone's being aggressive on the road, our tendency is to say, "what a jerk" instead of "maybe his wife's in the hospital". Similarly, we often judge players by a game or stretch of games without knowing what all is going on with the player on question.
