They have Diaco right on the very edge of the hot seat. These guys don't read the Boneyard.

Coaches Hot Seat Ranking
That's based on what a school will do in regards to their bad coach. Diaco at any of those other schools would be solidly on the hotseat if not FIRED already. At UConn he still has a chance to stay.

Dubious sources at best - he's the CR "blogger" who refused to believe the ESPN and the AP stories that Memphis was passed by early on. Jerked Memphis fans around by the collar hard till it was all said and done. (Again, could happen but this guy isn't getting the scoop or a leak).

Oh you didn't hear? You're going to love this one....Memphis held a "super-secret" in-person presentation in February and was "penned in" for a Big 12 invite. Thus all the scuttlebut about Memphis being out/no in-person presentation was a bald-faced lie.

Memphis fans are running with that fallacy and don't you dare question it or so help them...

We have our fair share of people who believe(d) UConn has/had secret deals in place with the Big Ten.

It's not a mental illness contained in Memphis.

The Memphis fan who pushed that fallacy above, claims to be dialed in to the Memphis AD and his "inside info" is NOT to be questioned....ever!!

Given the numerous other threads on Diaco didn't want to start a new one. . .this one seemed the best place to mention this given the C. Austin Cox tweet: Our man Gresh spoke today as if Diaco coming back is a foregone conclusion. Anyone else catch that?

I heard Gresh today talking like Diaco will have year 4. I wanted to reach through the radio and strangle that for even entertaining the idea. Just to be clear we are last in the nation in Scoring Offense, and 122 out of 128 in Total offense. Our average points per game is 15 ppg. By the 120th ranked team, the average ppg is over 20. It simply cannot be that after 3 years you can be last in the country (the very worst) and earn the right to return. It is an absolute sin he is being paid the money he is. No honor among thieves or con-men. Hit the road Bob. You failed miserably.

Nick, great points. The problem with Uconn athletics is no one is in charge. Everyone we hire wants to move on (except Hathaway and there was a reason for that). There is no continuity in the program. Benedict will be looking to get out as soon as he can. Susan too. Even Diaco, although he's certainly not going anywhere volutarily. This place is a resume builder. They need to find someone talented that actually wants to be here, but that's not going to be easy. I'm thinking it was a mistake to let TJ go. We need anyone who can coach offense. Anyone.

Gary ... Susan Herbst is already President at UConn longer than most University Presidents are around. With the scale of her ongoing plans, I expect she's focused on a good 5 years beyond (that will make about 11 total). In the University world - which I study - that is a long time for a President.

Benedict is impressive in his first 6 months in basic stuff. He has some really tough things on his plate right now. The extension - hate to give whaler11 credit - is on Herbst and Board. You have a pending extension with an agent pestering you. Benedict comes in and pushes through that - in his first 3 months? There are top Connecticut attorneys, I have found, that are always talking to Herbst and the administration. Someone should have said ... woahhhh.

If $5M is too large of a buyout, isn't $3.5M too large too?? If that's the reason that our football program is going to nosedive into the ground in the 2017 season, then we are likely stuck with him for two more years. Not just one.

Who really knows what we can afford. But given the state's 1.5B deficit which likely will result in layoffs at UConn, it difficult to imagine that tossing a football coach out early who will get paid regardless will be politically easy to do given the massive subsidy UConn sports already receives from the university budget. If we had big time tv /conf $ this obviously would be an entirely different situation.

Thinking numbers

Shenkman and Burton? They put up somewhat near that and got a building naming rights etc. First, I don't think the University has the funds to buy him out (think the other thread quote from McHugh is about right). Second, we just don't have guys that will put up $1m for that kind of thing. That's part of the problem with being the Public U that started FBS football in 1998. No traditional access to that kind of guy.

If we can't buy him out and Benedict doesn't commit to doubling the assistant coach pool, then RIP UConn football. Seriously. We will need to pay Joe Moorhead more than Diaco to try to lure him here and fix our offense. Our OC will have more power and security than our head coach.

UConn football. Gotta love it!

Seems wildly optimistic that anyone with any coaching skill is going to join this staff for next season. The only people who would do that are in DII and DIII football. Seriously, who wants to coach under wacky Bob who is unlikely to make it through the 2017 campaign?

Agreed. I think the only selling point would be to tell a new OC/DC "you are our interim HC when we fire Diaco during the season".
