Hardaway agrees to become Memphis coach (per ESPN)

Hell of a win for Dunleavy and company. Had been committed to Tulane but took an OV to Memphis after Penny was hired. Tigers went after him hard but he’s sticking with the Wave:

That is, easily, the right move from a educational/campus/city stand point

They're going crazy on Memphis twitter. Tigers should be decent next year. Their backcourt looks set. Next year, they're in the mix for James Wiseman, Malcom Dandridge, Chandler Lawson, etc

4*, #92 ranked, Antwann Jones is in Memphis right now.. and the visits gone so well he's already changed his twitter picture.

Penny would have the #25 class, with 2 more open schollies, with Antwann's signature.

Penny has impressed me with how hungry he is. Hopefully he makes this last assistant hire count. Good bench coach to learn from

What are your thoughts on the Wiseman reclass and the chances of Memphis landing him?

Who else is a top 2018 target? You have 1 ship left if not mistaken. It looks like 4 or five seniors/holdovers plus this good 2018 class right?

Wiseman is going to Memphis. He isn’t going to reclassify though. We have 2 scholarships left and we are currently the favorites to land sharp shooter Keonte Kennedy who decommited from Xaiver.

We are also working on Jordan Brown and seeing if their is a chance with him

Penny has a very narrow window of opportunity starting with the recruits he has built a relationship with in high school and AAU. If he doesn't win immediately he'll lose all his pull and the choice for local Memphis talent to make will be an easy one. THEY GONE!

Does anybody know of a coach with zero DI experience that has succeeded at a high major program?

Hardaway has been very impressive on the recruiting trail. Memphis has the clear cut #1 ranked AAC class (#28 overall) for 2018 and now already has a top 150 PF/C for '19 which is a big area of need. If he can coach at an average level they'll quickly be back in the mix.

Sam Mitchell to meet with Penny Hardaway, expects to finalize deal as Memphis assistant coach

Former NBA coach Sam Mitchell had his children over for lunch at his Atlanta area home Tuesday afternoon and joked it was so they could "ask dad for a few more bucks before I leave.”

But they all knew this was a chance to say goodbye. Not forever, but for now.

Mitchell was about to pack up "a bunch of clothes and a majority of my things" and make the 400-mile trip to Memphis for a new job.

"They understand and they're excited about it," Mitchell said in a telephone interview. "I'm excited to start a new chapter in my life and do something different."

Mitchell confirmed he is scheduled to meet with Memphis men's basketball coach Penny Hardaway on Wednesday and expects to finalize his position as an assistant coach on Hardaway's initial coaching staff at that time.
