Happy National Hot Dog Day

In my early post grad days out of UConn I lived around the corner from Sarge's Deli (3rd Avenue between 36th/37th Street) in NYC. At the time, open 24/7.

Had the classic NYC deli set-up of the hot dogs on the griddle with knishes in the front window. Was out drinking late night with one of my UConn housemates visiting from CT, and needed some late-night eats prior to crashing.

We walked in, the counter man took one look at our drunk a&&es and hit us with an all-time memorable line "Gentlemen, how many dozen" :p We probably went for 3 each and a knish!

The best hot dog is Nathan's Coney Island All Beef Frankfurter. Rated based on snap, juiciness, and flavor.
I'm a convert from Hebrew National.

They are very good. I buy those at Costco or Sam’s sometimes when having a cookout. I said I like Hebrew National best but I actually like Hebrew National All Natural, no nitrates etc best. If I am going to have to buy Hebrew Regular, I’ll usually choose Nathan’s instead. They are more tender and a little milder flavor wise. My kids all prefer that.

I gotta say, for grilling purposes, I think the Buffalo area has much better dogs than other areas. Sahlens and Wardynski’s are so much better charred and grilled than a Nathan’s or Ball Park, for example. Bigger, juicier, charred and delicious.
I’d like to try some of those. Hummel hotdogs are good too.

Some Weber’s horseradish mustard and ketchup and we’re feeling alright

I long to get up to Port Henry, New York, for a few Michigans at Gene's Michigan Stand.

I just had some awesome dogs at Goldburgers the other day, makes me wanna stop by again today...

Depending on the math for how many minutes each hot dog takes off your life, I either should have died in 1847 based off how many I've eaten, or I would live to 218 years old if I never ate a hot dog.
You need to factor in the amount of chemical preservatives that you've ingested with those hot dogs. There's a good chance that your body won't begin decomposing until about 70 years after you kick the bucket.

At home Hebrew National on the grill, bun length. Mr. Mustard hot, raw onion and relish.

Local favorite: Blackie’s in Cheshire, although mainly due to the hot home made relish/ German mustard combo.

Just had some dogs tonight, and it’s 100% due to this thread.

I chose to go with some more healthy, less chemically induced dogs though based on the ridicule here.

Couple of the guys "from the family'" reopened the Greeks in Shelton some years back. The food was as close to indistinguishable from the original Tomlinson's stand as could be hoped for. USUALLY. Every now and then, it sucked. Got to where if I walked in and the guy at the grill was under about 70, I walked back out. Rising costs of doing business drove them out again -- I believe it was last fall. Told me that to cover the costs of the food, the rent, etc., and make a profit, dogs would have to go up to 8 bucks, and fries to 5.

The Cricket in Lordship was another favorite dog-joint back in the 50s -- 60s. Closed in the early 200os, reopened about 10 years ago. The dogs are still exceptional. The fries, not so much.

Of course Frankie's in West Haven (Savin Rock) served world class hot dogs AND fries. When I worked on the road servicing business machines and covered Milford to East Haven in the 60/early 70s, I ate there at least 2 times a week, and often 3 or 4. That's also about the time my weight ballooned to over 300 pounds. Coincidence?

Finally, there was a place in Fairfield that I can't recall the name of that was very good. The dogs were great, but if you ordered fries, you got plebian, frozen fries. If you knew the secret code (An order of fries from the back room, please!) you got fantastic, freshly cut fries! Haven't been down that way in 15 years. Maybe more. Wonder if they're still around, and if so, do the back room fries still exist.

Hummels or Rosols. Any other hot dog is the wrong answer.
Hummels with natural casings.
my top 3
Jimmie's of Savin Rock
The Greek's
Food truck on Rt.34 near pink house cove in Derby

Could someone comment on the Costco Kirkland dog? Does it taste like Nathan’s or Hebrew National? Dog and coke $1.50.

Celebrated the third Wednesday of July every year.

What's your brand or go to shop?

How do you cook them?

How do you top them?
Grote and Weigle natural casing, grilled or fried, well done, mustard onions chili. Rosols also a good dog. New Britian I think Capitol lunch had great dogs and onion sauce.

Merritt Canteen today in Bridgeport. One chili dog and one w mustard and kraut. If you like spicy, their chili is outstanding.

Yes Rawley's is still good for the other poster asking.

Lived at 39th and 3rd when I first moved to the city. Sarge’s was great but a little expensive. Big fire there about 10-15 years ago if I remember correctly.

Two best hot dogs for me are Walter’s in Mamaroneck and the hot dogs they serve at the Bell Center for Canadiens games. Grew up in PA on Yocco’s as well, that’s a solid dog.

Can anyone confirm or is this me talking crazy - Yankee stadium used to serve their dogs in NE style buns?

I don't put a lot of thought into hot dogs but I do enjoy all kinds. Grilled and charred on a toasted bun. I like to keep it simple, ketchup and mustard, so I can taste the dog. Don't judge me, it started when I was a kid. I like Brats and other sausages better. I always thought hot dogs at restaurants were not a good value unless you are all about the toppings.

Taking this in a slightly different direction...

"the best hot dog i ever had..." was at some late night walk-up spot in Myrtle Beach (no recollection of what the name of the place is/was) across from the Spanish Galleon (Spee-gee to all the fratty folks) night club. First time I went there my friend and I didn't realize it was a walk-up so we strolled right in and nearly got murdered by the workers at like 3am. Once we figured out how a walk-up stand worked we were back every night the rest of beach week to get chili dogs. That night club was awful, and those hot dogs were probably awful but throw them together in a week long drunken stupor and they were glorious...
