It's safe to say that Knute Rockne is not giving the halftime speeches in the UConn locker room.

This is the second year in a row where the house just absolutely catches fire to start the second half.

Notre Dame is just not good enough to rip off a 10-0 or 12-0 run to start the second half. And given that UConn is not a good three point shooting team and that defense just does not get stops when it needs to, spotting a team 10 points to start a half is a disaster. The last two games were over four baskets into the second half.

Next game - show a movie during halftime, let them stay on the court, play X-Box, whatever.

To be fair, this has only been something you've been on UConn about for three years, accurately, but why would they change now?

Maybe it is better if they are down at the half so they don't get a false sense that they are in control of the game.

Maybe.

Go back to the end of the last year...

Up 9 at the half vs SDSU...16-6 SDSU run to go up 1 with 13 to play.

Up 7 at the half vs Arizona....12-4 AU run to go up 1 with about 15 to play.

Up 10 at the half vs UK...14-2 UK run to go up 2 with 15 to play.

This year...

Up 2 at Rutgers - 8-0 run to go down 6.

Up 2 at Tenn - 9-0 run to go down 7.

Today, up 3, 13-0 run to go down 10.

Then add in their inability to get stops when they have momentum...36-34, they let ND squirt away again. 40-38, ND gets two easy buckets. Bad habits.

I give Brey some credit for going zone right out of the gate in the 2nd half. UConn played like they had never seen one. The 13-0 run was not as much a product of ND playing a shutdown zone, but UConn standing around and having little clue how to break it. They played as if it was a impenetrable force-field, spend 30 seconds passing it around the perimeter or driving into traffic and then throwing up some desperation shot.

I rarely criticizes the coaching staff, but after an entire week of practice, did we see anything different than what we have been seeing. Their offense throughout most of the game lacks much variety. Teams simply know how to play our high screen/pick-and-roll offense especially when they see it trip after trip.

After putting together a nice late run, they chose the worst time to commit some careless turnovers. They had ND on the ropes and simply let them slip away. They couldn't have gotten a better player with a better look at the very end, but they shouldn't have needed that shot to take it to OT. I couldn't tell if Lamb got fouled or not. It wasn't the prettiest officiated game I've ever seen, but when plays needed to be made they just couldn't make enough of them.

This team has far too much talent to be playing like this. I hope they figure it out like they did last season. Lot of games left to turn things around, but the signs are concerning.

Could also be the law of averages after winning so many close games last year.
