Guys dont seem to be having fun this year

Very little life in this team right now. Very little teamwork. Perhaps there is some animosity between the new guys and the guys who were on the floor when we won it all last year.
 
for real????....a loss always brings out some interesting posts....this one is right up there with the best of them...
 
this team lacks continuity and leadership right now in my opinion
 
I shouldn't say this but.....Lamb's sleepy, emotionless face bugs me sometimes. I know a person can't help how they look but when I see him have an awful game and foul out and then not show anger or disappointment on his face, I am ashamed to admit, it pisses me off. I feel the same way about A-Rod when he strikes out and the team is eliminated from the playoffs and his outward emotions are the same as if it was batting practice.

This is not just a loss. We lost back to back games to NJ teams which hasnt happened in this decade if ever. There is definitively somethhing wrong, and the guys don't seem to be having any fun. This team is reminiscent of the 09/10 team with Dyson and Sticks that went to the NIT after making the Final Four the year before.

Nobody had a good game today except Drummond but even Drummond was turning the ball over. Napier plays like a 2 guard and is not a leader. He can't or is unable to penetrate and break the zone which is hurting the team. Even though Napier scored he didnt have a good game. Boatright did well to penetrate but missed easy shots at the baskets. The whole team lacks toughness, energy, there seems frictions between guys. Oriakhi was the same as usual which is not much. I believe Roscoe needs to start to bring some toughess and grit to this team. Oriakhi should not be starting anymore. Starting lineup for next game should be:

1: Boatright 2: Lamb 3: Giffey 4: Roscoe 5: Drummond.
Bench: Napier, Oriakhi, Olander

happy to see every negative aspect of any future UConn team will be compared to the 09-10 team...

I'm going to enjoy the ride, and then I'll smile come March when all longtime fans know what will be happen

But...you were okay with it last year? I love emotion...Donny Marshal is my fave all time Husky...but Jeremy's look is cool to me.
 
I think it all starts with Alex Oriakhi. Calhoun needs to have a chat with him and tell him to start acting like a man. The pouting, the shoulders sagging, the head down...these are the type of things you see in middle school kids. He needs to park himself at the block, and go to work.
 
Actually it bugged me last year too. It bugs me more this year when he was expected to step up and be the leader.

I think it is funny that you say this, because my son always says he has "sleepy eyes," and will say, "That guy has sleepy eyes, kinda like JL. Know what I mean?" if he sees a person who has them. I don't see it! And, I thought he looked like he was gonna cry tonight when he got fouled out. I thought he was widening his eyes to keep tears from welling up. I personally think it's better to not show emotion. I think it gives a player an edge; however, a few times when he has scored, his face breaks into an adorable smile that I love to see.

Seriously though it seems like this is a classic case of playing down to your opponent.


I have a gut feeling when they go against a team like cuse or UL in a packed gym and crazy environment theyll be at the top of their game. Whether we or lose it always seems like we play better against better competition, and seem to snooze against teams like RU and SH.
 
If you didn't see this coming, you were blind. I for one, dowplayed the loss of Kemba because of the pure talent we had on the roster after AD committed - a great team on paper. But clearly there is a complete void of leadership and anyone with the ability to command as a floor leader on the team. We take for granted the small things that make teams come together - for one, Alex playing like a pouty dog had an exponential effect on the chemistry of the team. He had yet another complete dog of a game. He should be upperclass glue - leadership. Instead he is a negative force on the team. When you have a team full of freshman/sophomores, you need someone that's been around the block to show the way. Jeremy. as talented as he is, just doesn't have that intangible to lead a team. Shabazz is too inconsistent to be that person.

I get Neils going in and deserving a starting spot based on his effort, but bottom line is that he's not one of the five most talented guys on this team. He's a bench guy. It's mid Jan and this team continues to have absolutely no identity or gel - scary concept given they have what are probably two lottery picks on the roster. They are not a fun team to watch, at all. Underachieving teams rarely are.

That's what a lot of "longtime fans" were saying in the 09/10 season as well. Never happened. This team could be different and I really hope it is. Drummond is a nice kid that deserves better and there are a few others on the team that fall into that same category. But, after watching this team for well over 20 years and talking to folks throughout the years that were "inside" the program, when the team fails it is usually due to a team chemistry problem. To be fair, it isn't always the fault of a player or players. Frankly, Calhoun can be a serious jerk to deal with and not every kid can handle him. Like everyone Calhoun has his good points and his bad points. He is a double-edged sword that has slain a few monsters over the years. We get to benefit from that and, sometimes, we get teams that are frustrating as hell to watch. None of us know how this will play out. I won't assume it will be good or bad. As silly as it is to assume it will be a bad season, it is equally silly for "longtime fans" to assume it will be a good ending because, with their selective memory, it always does. It doesn't. Stuff happens........

Good point to some extent and it's hard to argue anything against Calhoun given his success. What I think longtimers have seen is that as Calhoun gets older, and his is old, his values become more and more stubborn. And he doesn't flex to his kids as much as his kids have to flex to him. So last year could have just been a great formula/mix to what his current recipe entails. He had an on the floor coach that could buffer the bunch. This year, this team has nothing of that sort - if anything, a confusing upperclassmen that is probably forcing more drama/distraction that anything resembling leadership. I honestly hate what's become of AO this year - it shows such little character as someone who should really mean quite a bit to the success of this year's team. He has a pass because of what he did to earn the title last year, but this year's performance resembles something similar to what Jerome Dyson showcased in his senior year. Here's hope to him turning it around.

The 2009-10 team was absolutely running through people before Dyson's injury. And I mean going-into-Louisville's-house-stomping-the-#3 team-in-the-country-and-making-Earl-Clark--his-pants-everytime-he-entered-the-paint type of running through people.

They were on another level from every team not named UNC that year until one of their best players got hurt...and still managed to make the Final Four. I really think that the 09-10 squad has become the most under-appreciated in UConn history.

I think you are confusing the 09/10 squad with the 08/09 team. The 09/10 team didn't make the tournament.

Yup. If we just had a coach without flaws, maybe we would have won four or five championships in the last thirteen years. Like .... Like .... Wait, you mean no one has achieved more than that? Than what was the point of your post (other than pointing out that mortal human beings don't win everything they set out to every time they set out to do it?)

This is not a good team right now. It is a collection of good players but it is not a good team.
 
guys are never having fun when they are losing. i'd assume we drop out of the top 20, but probably not out of the top 25. that's lower than i thought we'd be this year. losses to UCF and Snookie are NOT good losses. Seton hall i can understand. but this is just simply a bad loss. and i don't know if there are chemistry problems, or what, but i don't see it changing any time soon. it's gonna be a bumpy ride. but hey, we won NC #3 last year. after going 9-9 in the big east. that ain't half bad...
 
Losing isn't fun. Underperforming your talent level isn't fun. It is more likely they are not having fun because they aren't playing well than that they're not playing well because they are not having fun.

We're going to look into this on your account, but, frankly, confusing the 09 team for 10 team usually merits a two week ban from the BY without any further review.
 
Something is definitely going on with this team, I feel like there have been some issues that just haven't been released to the public. It doesn't even seem like all the coaches are getting along. Rarely do you see any of the assistant coaches talking on the bench.

Roscoe smith doesn't even sniff the court until the last 2 minutes? His wrist wasn't even taped anymore. Definitely something going on behind the scenes. C'mon Man

9/10 was the one and only truly underachieving team in Calhoun's career and it was a team led by seniors. They were supposed to be better in Nov. They were not a team of underclassman plus 1 learning new rolls and/or learning the system and/or learning to play in the Big East.
 
The truth is, nobody has any idea if they're "having fun" or not. It's all stupid, idle speculation- but I suppose that's the point of a message board.
