Geno Auriemma has been quoted as saying that "Guard play defines the NCAA Tournament." "Whomever has the best guard tends to win."

UConn has a clear advantage. They are the only tourney team that can start 3 #1 HS guards in Paige, Christyn and Azzi. With #2 Evina, #5 Caroline and BE Def POY nearby. UConn has the best group of guards in the field and if they all play well on any given night. watch out.

They aren’t just “3 #1 HS guards”, they are three over all HS NPOY. From three different years of course.

Actually, UConn has four #1 rated guards. Evina was the USA Today HS NPOY and she was rated #1 on Prospects Nation.
Evina was the #1 rated guard coming out of HS on the ESPN 100?

Yes, but she was # 2 overall behind Megan Walker, a forward/wing. Evina was #1 overall on Prospects Nation, and as I indicated, she was named HS NPOY by USA Today.
Didn’t know that, thanks for such welcome info.

Yup. I agree with Coach G. Guard play is going to be very important during the tournament run. I love our chances.

Not only do we have top guards, but they have different talents to fit different game plans. Geno may play a guard orientated offense, very quick with full court presses.

if at least two of the guards are shooting well it will keep UConn in most games..........if three or more are shooting well it's most likely lights out!! Still UConn also needs strong steady defense and rebounding from the front line if they want to win another NC.......

I always give Geno the benefit of the doubt. he's the greatest of all time of all-time so I'd be a moron not to. I do think that one place where the women's game has evolved that he dismisses a bit is that more teams are employing systems where they have legitimate front court players. Having superior guard play is certainly a huge advantage, but not at the expense of giving up offensive rebounds. This team cannot win if their opponent is constantly getting second and third chances. Multiple possessions off of offensive rebounds can quickly offset UConn shooting a higher percentage from 3. This concern grows exponentially as we advance to each round.
