Go back to this crude approximation of Nate Silver's geographic statistics of how big various fanbases are in FBS football.

Our strongest case is right in here.

You have a bunch of lowly BCS programs in major conferences that are 300k-400k (some smaller). They get the big check & they get the benefits; meanwhile, a brief look across the landscape ... OH YEAH ... a few programs clearly have grown dramatically in the last 8 years.

That is what is being stifled. If you can step up ... if you can grow your fanbase by a factor of 2, the Poobah commissioners want to keep you out. They will take the underachieving names of 25-75 years ago rather than something that has a chance to grow. Restraint of Trade.

And who has grown from 2003-2011:

Boise State. Far better Program. Sizable fanbase.

Rutgers. This guy Silver has them at an over 900k fanbase. Clearly though, they were not much farther than a solid MAC/CUSA program (like Marshall or Bowling Green) at the turn of the century. Great excitement built by Schiano.

USF. Decent sized ... and probably the highest percentage increase of all BCS programs.

UConn. We were definitely MAC sized prior to 2004. Could we be placed at an Akron/Kent/Ohio number? Sure. So, this crude approximation shows we probably have grown our football "FANBASE" by a factor of 3 or so. (*maybe 4/5).

These four programs are currently locked out whilst slugs are advancing. That is why this stinks. I'd like a "relegation" system like English soccer. I think what these conference commissioners & bowl oligarchs have done is poisonous. I want opportunity for the up&coming (even if it is UMass ... or Old Dominion or Troy). This stuff stinks.

Pudge, you have nailed it..Maybe relegation is in order!

In football, it is hard to be a newbie as the odds are stacked against you from a scheduling standpoint. If you are not in a BCS conference, how do you get a decent home schedule? Since teams play only 12 games, they don't want to schedule a good newbie, and almost certainly will not play them on the road. This is what kills the newbies schedule strength.

Basketball is much easier to be a newbie and the NCAA tournament is a great equalizer.
