Grizzlies Sign Cam Spencer To A Guaranteed Contract

I love Dove but Cam may have over taken him as the greatest one year player ever at UConn. It’s close but the chip has to be considered.

They both made everyone else better.

Both had very good supporting casts as team members, but Dove did not play with the upcoming nba ROY.

I don’t know man, the Dream season team started everything the snowball kept getting bigger after that season.

I am now convincing myself Dove gets the nod because he may have been the piece that started our rise to best CBB program of tge last 30 years.

Maybe it is a tie.

It’s tough one for sure. The Dove didn’t get the title and lost on a lucky shot by college basketball’s most hated player of all-time but on the other hand, didn’t have the same supporting cast as Cam, who does have the title.

If you ask Jim Calhoun, he will tell you Chris Smith is the most important recruit he ever landed. Before him, top level Connecticut players were going to Villanova, St. John's, and other schools.

Wow. Did not know they were teammates there, for 2 years as well. Very cool that they ended up on the same NBA team.
Not only that but they roomed together their sophomore season.

This was a one and done comparison. I agree that Smith opened the door for local talent. Before him we lost most of the in state or New England talent to other schools.

Corny Thompson who came a few years before Smith was a great in state player.

He was a bit undersized vertically for a true power foward back then, listed at 6’8” but closer to 6’6” in reality. I played against Corny in HS he was a man among boys there, but to his credit although undersized he ended up having a respectable career.

This joke has been beaten to death lol. This is a slightly different situation, as Cam did play for Rutgers (unlike the other "Rutgers-coached" players who went to UConn).
I never knew anyone nationally took them to task! That was good.

Clearly I am not a scout, but based off his shooting ability and offensive IQ he showed at UConn, it was pretty clear he was going to be a quality NBA player which is why I was surprised he wasn't a first rounder.

Yeah he loved it so much that he jumped ship immediately.

The marketing reeks of when the big bank I USED to work for as a low level portfolio associate promoted our 200bps benchmark outperformance in International portfolios in 2008. People were ecstatic until they realized the EAFE was -43% vs us only being -41%.

Cam didn't enter his name in the transfer portal until we lured him into it late with $$. And he spent as many seasons at Rutgers as he did at UConn.

I'm not a Rutgers hater. I actually root for them a bit because I'm a Jersey guy.

This is all based on hearsay, but.... I don't think your first sentence is true. I've read rumors that Georgetown was trying to lure Cam away from RU, and tampering would be on brand for Cooley. But everything I've read is that UConn/Hurley went into attack mode AFTER Cam put his name in the portal. The RU folks hate UConn, but haven't accused Hurley of tampering with Cam.

Keep in mind Cam also said some tough stuff about the Rutgers program on the way out. Basically that nobody is held accountable. He then (from what I've read) tried to get another year of eligibility at UConn but was told it wasn't going to happen. Moving on was the right call as he made good money last year and now has a 3 year guarantee. It was time for him to move on, but it seems as if he appreciated his time at UConn more than Rutgers.

I agree with @Chuck. Where are you getting this conspiracy theory?

First off Cam did enter the portal late because there was no deadline for transfers who graduated.

If UConn was the one who tampered and got him to enter the portal then why did he visit Miami before visiting UConn? That would be strange.

On top of that Hurley has been very vocal about not liking other programs tampering and said UConn doesn't do that. It would be a really bad look for him if what you said was revealed some how after what he's said.

No surprise on the updated contract. All he needed was some PT to show his value. Will continue to evolve and adjust to the NBA game. Heart of a Lion.

You guys are a bit naive IMO. "Tampering" has an obvious bad connotation but there's levels to this. You don't think it was weird that Cam waited until late May to enter the portal? He got a sense of his market value and opted in. I'm sure it wasn't an explicit "hey we've got $500k and a Hellcat for you" like Kansas' approach, but he wasn't performing charity either.

And I'm not disputing his quote at Big East Media Day:
For me, I wanted to play at the highest level that I can professionally and I thought UConn brought the best opportunity. The Big East provides a lot in terms of me raising my level from a guard standpoint. Along with that, the defensive end is somewhere I want to get better at and playing against great guards is something that will help me get to the next level and be successful.

Could be. I don’t dispute there is lots of tampering with transfers. But you have no evidence to back up your assertion. I prefer not to point fingers at our own staff without some facts.
