I've asked this before and have been shot down by our fellow NBA experts, but why didn't the Clippers just trade for Ben Gordon?
Is he overpaid? No doubt. Is he one dimensional? Yup. But I'm sorry, if the Clippers are serious about contending for a title, and keeping Chris Paul in L.A. past 2013, that's a move that would have helped immensely. I'm pretty sure the Clippers are well under the cap, Gordon's contract is up in two years, and the Pistons would have been thrilled just to get rid of Gordon's contract and wouldn't have asked for much.
Ben Gordon takes the Clippers from a cute story to a legitimate title contender. Him and Chris Paul are a match made in heaven--an actual PG that knows how to get him the ball off screens. They suddenly have a second crunch time scorer, somebody who lives for the big moment.
As I said, he's overpaid, but if you have to swallow a bad contract to greatly improve your team, that's what you have to do. There is no player in the NBA more dependent on his environment than Ben Gordon.
Think of Ben Gordon and Caron Butler on the wings coupled with a two likeable players in Griffin and Paul. Would have been my favorite NBA team ever.
