I think we should start a #freeboat pool and pay his $100 a month! So, he had to pay his mother's ticket back? With what?

That, ironically, would be an NCAA violation.

.-.
So a mon borrows $$ so as to visit a school woth her so so she can evaluate his future surrounds, and the kid is screwed??

Go NYT!! I smell a Pulitzer here.

After the game, the wife and I went to Calhoun's to cry in some beers. Joe D'Ambrosio showed up with some people and we ended up talking to him for a bit. Really nice guy and we got to see the champ ring. It was sweet.

Anyway, he said when he was doing his pre-game interview with JC, the first 5 mins all he talked about was the NYT article. He wouldn't say anything more about it but it was obvious that JC has alot to say about that article.

I had no idea this was about his MOTHER traveling to a school. When his "suspension" is talked about on air why has no one mentioned it?

that he agrees with it or that there's more to come out Tuesday?

.-.
He didn't say what position he took on it. I tried to get more info but didn't want to push too hard.

My problem is the tenuous thread the NCAA uses to screw a kid. They had a previous relationship with the guy who gave the mother the ticket. There should be no problem and yet they have manufactured one. All the while the BCS is raking in billions ( with a ridiculous system , BTW) and the NCAA tournament proceeds could support two or three small countries. It's despicable.

I agree that the kid is getting screwed in this, but I also think that he, his family and friends used incredibly bad judgement...incredibly bad. His AAU coach gave his mother the money to fly to Connecticut? And he didn't think there would be a problem with that? If you look at that not as a UCONN fan but from a neutral perspective, you have to say huh? would Rose have provided that kind of money to a kid if he didn't play basketball? And you also have to say that it is highly questionable...This is one of those situations in my mind where everyone is basically wrong, though oddly enough neither of the parties who are paying the highest price are really much more than bystanders. The NCAA is wrong for not getting on with it. Rose was wrong for providing money. As an AAU coach he has a responsibility to Know how that stuff will impact the NCAA eligibility of his players. Mom was wrong for accepting the money from a coach. But beyond that, I'm not sure I buy that this is all that was involved. Round trip airfair from Chicago to Hartford is between $300 and $650. If you fly coach. To me this sounds like there were multiple instance of people paying for trips. If UCONN has a fault, it was in not vetting the situation. Boatright's fault seems to be being related to somebody who took advantage of his celebrity. And despite what Nocera would have you believe, it isn't like anybody is saying none of this happened. It did. His argument is that it should be ok. Which I suppose is an argument you could make. And that what happens before somebody comes to an NCAA institution is irrelevent, which is taken to its logical conclusion means would seem to suggest that players can play a couple of years in the NBA-D league, then if they aren't cutting it, decide to go to college and play there.

Is it known that it was for a ticket 2 visit UCONN or is it just an assumption?

In case you didn't notice on Nocera's page at NYT, he's been writing on the NCAA 'rules' for a while:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/14/opinion/nocera-more-ncaa-justice.html

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/07/opinion/nocera-ncaas-justice-system.html

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/magazine/lets-start-paying-college-athletes.html?_r=1&ref=magazine

"the fact that the N.C.A.A. is willing to destroy an athlete’s career without even a nod to a fundamental right like due process is simply wrong. It needs to change."

GO Joe!

Just for the record, there is nothing to indicate that the plane trip in question was to Uconn. Boatright made several additional visits - UNLV, Providence, and West Virginia, if not others.

.-.
Even if the trip was to UConn it has nothing to do with UConn.

But why on earth would the NCAA be all over this mom for caring about her child's education while giving a pass to Cam Newton's dad who was extorted a number of schools?

I'm just following N

I'm just following Nocera's logic. He doesn't really say it was to UCONN. I think he more or less implies it was, but you're right. And I suppose it is possible that it was to mor ethan one, which would make more sense in terms of the multiple NCAA "investigations."

Look, if The college presidents who run the NCAA want to change the rules, they absolutley can do that. they want to allow pros to play in college they can do that. In fact they changed the rules 10-15 years ago to let guys who were pros in one sport to compete in another. Guys can sign a pro contract in baseball and still play college football or basketball for example.

Couldn't agree more!!

Pal,

I agree with you on this. I thought newton should have been suspended, too.

Looking forward to the continuation of his article in tomorrow's NYT... The more pressure on the NCAA the better...

Watching the Cincy game last week... and seeing Gates out their on the floor while Boatright sat... made me pretty sick

Part two is out, sorry but I can't link. He goes further on about the "Gezpatcho" that is the NCAA and how Boatright and others like him are victims.

Hate the BCS, but they are the one group fighting the power of the NCAA.

.-.
The Blind Side demonstrated this side of the NCAA's behavior. There is a lot of seediness in amateur sports. But if that movie and this reporting is indicative of the way the NCAA conducts its investigations, then there needs to be change.
