“In high school I was more of a combo guard,” he noted. “When I came to college, I realized I had more potential being a pro point guard. If I was blessed enough to make it to the NBA, that’s what I’d be. But, I’m willing to do anything coach wants me to do. Whatever he wants me to do, I’ll do it – whether it be running in the rain at (midnight), I’ll do it.”

He had foot trouble last year. We expect these guys to be robots.

“Things that were going on throughout the whole season, whether it be inside or outside. Sometimes as a young athlete, you let things get to your head. I learned from my mistakes.”

It was more than an foot injury. Shabazz had some bad shooting nights & other games where he would not shoot & appeared to be in a funk. I'm not sure which caused which. The previous year he played with confidence & shot fearlesssly.

Maybe everyone's expectations were too high coming off 2o11. But something was off with last years team.

I think it was the kemba walker factor. Napier was wide open much of his freshman year because walker was the priority for opposing teams. Last year there was bad chemistry, napier was injured and he became more of focus for defenses

Without looking up stats I think he may have shot the ball better last year than his frosh year but I could be wrong. Anyway, not having JC much of the year, not having a backup or partner in Boat put pressure oh his ability to guard w/o foul trouble. Having what turned out to be an awful interior offensive attack hurts the guards and puts pressure on them. He could guard on the ball better and not take as many chances I agree and he will need to without a real shot blocking threat this year. But he had a very good soph year and people were too critical..........

Boatright is leaving after this year (whether he should or not) so BAZZ can run the point his senior year. So he is being a bit dramatic per the usual.

Thanks for the quotes bro. Next time its raining at midnight I will be thinking of SN.

Part of what made Bazz as dangerous as he was in his Frosh year was the fact that he could come in to a game after the starting point had already played 5-8 minutes without rest and he could hound the s out of him. My favorite play from the 10-11 season is from Maui where Bazz strips Doron Lamb in the backcourt, goes to the hoop, gets the and 1, and stares Lamb down. His confidence during that year was amazing, but with Walker and Bev on the roster the team had options. He took so much crap this past year because JC couldn't tell him go out there and make (insert opposing PGs name)'s life miserable. The message in the beginning of last year turned to, don't foul and run the team! Difficult adjustment.

A few other things that made Napier more dangerous as a freshman:
  1. Just the simple fact there were 3 talented guards, his whole freshman year, helped immensely (four with Bev, who was at least could be relied on to give a breather to players).
  2. No hurt foot - seriously, he's in a boot now and played a least the second half of the season with a hurt foot.
His shooting numbers were up slightly as a sophomore, but it wasn't a huge jump and still below par.
His A/TO rate did increase significantly, which is nice.
Assists per minute were higher, TO's, Fouls and Rebounds per minute were about the same. Steals were down considerably.
Having more guards (even if not of Jeremy's caliber) should help considerably. The biggest thing for Napier will be having a healthy foot and playing fewer minutes. He really shouldn't have had to play 35 a night last year. His FG% needs to get above 40% also. Hopefully, they can bring him down to about 28-30 minutes a night, which will put less pressure on him, give him more rest and allow him to pressure the ball more.

He played too many minutes early in the season as a result of the Boat being docked. The strongest chemistry on the team was JC and SN, and JC was missing in action. He is a combo, but as he said he will need to play point at the next level to be relevant. I am concerned about his foot issues. Hopefully, they will not haunt him. He has always had a great attitude, but he needs to lead to make this team successful. PG's need to be able to knock down the open shot, hit the open man in their shooting rhythum, play D, and most of all LEAD. I am a BAZZ rooter, but he didn't lead last year. The chemistry should be more to his liking this year as long as JC doesn't disappear again.
