Came across this just now. Not sure if anyone posted it but it's a great read.

One of my favorite lines
If you're a dying-to-win homecoming queen but are a destined-for-princess school like Rutgers and someone wants you (other than your crumbling league), you go.
The only thing the writer should have done or realized is that the company she is writing for is more at fault than anyone. All that money has to come from somewhere to fuel this greed.....it doesn't just appear. ESPN is as much at fault as is FOX and CBS and all the Conference Commish for destroying college sports..

Excellent freakin' article but yeah, ESPN is an accomplice in this mess.

This - "So your daughter plays field hockey at Maryland, and instead of driving to Virginia you now have to figure out how to get to Iowa to see her play? Deal with it." -

I don't have a daughter but this resonates as a parent of a 16 and 14 year old boys.

Media Consultants on the make deserve some of the blame
Hustlers. Live and Die by the pitch.

Not a fan of the article. It's naive. Where was O'Neil's ire when Rutgers was cutting academic programs while losing $30 million a year on sports (not to mention the stadium buildout which isn't even on the athletic dept's books)? No articles written then. But she's going to blast the administrators now? O'Neil's point is perverse.

Academic programs?!? When does ESPN or the NCAA care about academics?!?

Well, if Oneil wants to stick to sports, then stick to sports. That's fine. But don't go lecturing college presidents about ethics and morals. Those guys might be some of the most amoral bastards alive, but if your argument is weak, it's best to clam up if you're O'Neil. Or Len Elmore. Or Dick Vitale for that matter.
